About The Position

PURVIS Systems is seeking a Mechanical Designer/Drafter to support mechanical design and drafting efforts for U.S. Navy submarine programs. This role involves developing and updating technical drawings, conducting ship checks, and assisting with mechanical documentation under the guidance of senior designers and engineers. The position offers a clear pathway to advancement through hands-on experience, training, and demonstrated performance. Requirements

  • 1–4 years of professional experience in mechanical design or drafting (entry‑level candidates with relevant education considered).
  • Familiarity with submarine platforms, ship systems, or Navy alteration packages (TEMPALT/OPALT/SHIPALT).
  • Developed understanding of mechanical drafting principles, manufacturing processes, and drawing conventions.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical specifications and technical drawings.
  • Basic understanding of drafting standards; familiarity with ASME Y14.3 preferred.
  • Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD® or similar 2D drafting tools; Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Candidate must be able to obtain a government security clearance to the level of SECRET.
  • Ability to conduct ship checks, work in confined spaces, and climb 20–25 ft vertical ladders unassisted.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in mechanical engineering technology or related manufacturing discipline preferred.
  • Prior work with military specifications or defense programs, a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop 2D & 3D mechanical design foundations, systems, installation drawings, and arrangement drawings.
  • Create and maintain Lists of Material (LOM); interpret Government Furnished Information (GFI) to meet design requirements.
  • Perform basic electrical power distribution analysis, including voltage drop and load balancing calculations.
  • Conduct ship checks aboard U.S. Navy submarines to collect field data, verify configurations, and support installation planning.
  • Update drawings using redline input from senior personnel; perform self-checks for accuracy and compliance.
  • Participate in internal design reviews and incorporate feedback.
  • Communicate with engineers, designers, and project staff to clarify design intent and task requirements.
  • Occasional travel to naval installations for ship checks.
