About The Position

Leidos Defense Mechanical Design & Analysis Department is seeking talented Mechanical Design Interns to join a diverse team to create unique solutions for complex problems. With offices across the United States engaging in the defense, space, cyber, and commercial fields, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific, and IT solutions. Leidos' Mechanical Design and Analysis Department is actively seeking college students (Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Grad) to work at our Huntsville facility over the summer break (May, June, July, and August depending on student availability). This position will allow students the opportunity to experience hands-on technical work in design, 3D modeling, engineering drawing development, and/or analysis using CAE tools and hand calculations. Candidate(s) will receive mentorship from junior and senior engineers, and the intern will take actual ownership of design tasks. They will be given challenges that make a real impact on hardware that is delivered to our customers.

Requirements

  • Student must be working toward a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • Student must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Overall GPA of 3.5 or above is required.
  • Student must be willing to work in-office in the Huntsville, AL area.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with design in CAD software – SolidWorks and Creo preferred
  • Hands-on experience with the design and assembly of mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with the ASME Y14.5 GD&T standard.
  • Experience drafting engineering drawings following ASME Y14.100 guidelines.
  • Strong self-starter who showcases initiative to take on complex technical challenges.
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, and receive mentorship from an excellent engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Support engineering design activities for DoD customers utilizing a broad engineering knowledge base.
  • Develop 3D CAD models from initial concept through to final designs.
  • Draft engineering drawings for production, implement design revisions to support existing products, and/or participate in prototype assembly and testing activities.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to produce cutting edge solutions for our customers.
  • Present designs/findings to senior engineering staff.

Benefits

  • Pay Range $48,100.00 - $86,950.00
