About The Position

The Mechanical Design Engineer will learn Schmalz Vacuum Automation & Handling Systems product ranges and apply them to application projects. This role involves designing custom End-of-Arm Tooling (EOATs) for material handling systems used on robots, gantries, and manual systems. The engineer will prepare various types of drawings, including dimensional, approval, and assembly drawings, ensuring they meet customer requirements. Responsibilities also include creating new part numbers, learning and applying local standard products, and providing design support to customers, distributors, and sales engineers. The position involves assisting with testing projects, supporting local product development (design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, roll-out), interfacing with machine shops, and collaborating with the Assembly Team for design information and debugging. Additionally, the role requires producing operating manuals and project documentation, maintaining design records, revising drawings, managing third-party item databases, performing cost comparisons, and providing on-site support at customer locations. Other duties may include CAD database management, PLM tasks, and supporting colleagues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing preferred)
  • Three or more years of experience in the design, testing, and development of new products
  • Proficient in 3D CAD; SolidWorks is preferred
  • Experience creating engineering drawings
  • Industrial Automation experience preferred
  • Superior communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team, and function independently
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize work
  • Strong time management skills with an emphasis on professionalism, flexibility, and decided sales and service orientation as well as entrepreneurial inclination

Responsibilities

  • Learn the Schmalz Vacuum Automation & Handling Systems product ranges and apply them on application projects
  • Design custom EOATs for material handling used on robots, gantries, and manual handling systems
  • Prepare dimensional drawings, approval drawings, assembly drawings and other complex drawings
  • Work with the Applications Team to understand the scope of work for designs which meet and exceed the customer’s requirements
  • Implement customer requirements on drawings sent to the customer
  • Create new part numbers in ABAS and/or PLM
  • Learn and apply local standard products and practices used for custom designed solutions
  • Support end customers, distributors, independent sales reps & company sales engineers with design support questions for the office and occasionally on-site
  • Assist Vacuum Automation and Handling Systems engineers in testing projects
  • Support local product development, which includes but is not limited to design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing and product roll-out
  • Interface with machine shops to manufacture designed parts and verify their spec and tolerances with the created drawings
  • Work with the Assembly Team as needed – provide design info and intent as well as debug support
  • Produce Operating manuals, pneumatic diagrams, I/O tables, and supporting project documentation
  • Maintain notes, design calculations and other documentation (like drawings, bill of materials, list of design parameters, and /performance guarantees) for future reference
  • Revise and update existing drawings reflecting design changes, in collaboration with project manager to ensure consistent documentation of the project
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of third-party items and services database
  • Review and modify information with collaboration by Project Manager
  • Make data available to application engineers and project managers
  • Perform cost comparisons to help reduce the cost of existing solutions
  • Be on customer site as required for review of design details as well as installations and run off support/service calls
  • Other duties as required relating to CAD database management, PLM, etc.
  • Support other colleagues when necessary, including answering phones and assisting in assembly services
