Design Engineer

ASSA ABLOY•Monroe, NC

About The Position

Develop and support innovative, highly configurable automatic door solutions from concept through production release. The role includes designing new products and enhancements, creating prototypes, validating performance, and supporting manufacturing implementation. Working independently and collaboratively, the engineer translates business and customer needs into practical, manufacturable solutions that deliver value to installers, end users, and manufacturing operations. Success requires mechanical design expertise, hands-on problem-solving, and the ability to drive projects from concept through commercialization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 2 years of product design experience, preferably in electromechanical, hardware, building products, or related industries.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software; SolidWorks experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience creating detailed manufacturing drawings, assemblies, and multi-level BOMs.
  • Hands-on experience in an engineering laboratory, prototype shop, or similar technical environment.
  • Working knowledge of aluminum, steel, and glass design applications.
  • Experience performing tolerance stack-up analysis and applying GD&T principles.
  • Familiarity with basic electromechanical systems and component integration.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with DraftSight or other 2D CAD software.
  • Product data management (PDM) experience, preferably Teamcenter.
  • Experience with project management software such as Jira.
  • CNC machining or manufacturing process knowledge.
  • Experience with DFMA principles, supplier collaboration, and engineering release processes.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including VBA and macros.
  • Experience designing configurable or option-based product platforms.
  • Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) or similar engineering analysis tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop automatic door products, options, and enhancements while balancing performance, cost, reliability, manufacturability, and configurability.
  • Work with product management, manufacturing, sourcing, field service, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and develop engineering solutions.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, detailed manufacturing drawings, multi-level bills of material (BOMs), and product documentation.
  • Build, test, and evaluate prototypes; develop test plans, analyze results, and implement design improvements.
  • Apply engineering principles for material selection, tolerance analysis, GD&T, and electromechanical integration.
  • Support product industrialization, including DFMA, pilot builds, engineering change orders (ECOs), and production launches.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing and supply chain teams to support product implementation and ongoing product needs.
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities, communicating progress, risks, and recommendations to cross-functional teams.
  • Drive continuous improvement in product quality, documentation standards, release processes, and configurable product platforms.
