Mechanical Design Engineer

MAG AUTOMOTIVE LLCSterling Heights, MI

About The Position

MAG is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to design work holding fixtures and mechanical devices for metal removal CNC and special application machines. In this role, the Mechanical Design Engineer will collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines in Sterling Heights and Germany, and provide engineering support for manufacturing and service as needed. A high level of communication, both verbal and written, is expected. The role involves designing work holding fixtures based on customer part locating datum, process demands, cutting forces, and MAG standard fixture design principles, as well as other mechanical devices using sound mechanical design principles. Designs must be correctly sized based on application, project scope, and project budgets, with an understanding of material applications, heat treat applications, and mating component sizing and fits. Basic knowledge of fluid power design related to work holding fixtures and other mechanical devices is also required. The engineer must be able to understand and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance Standards, research and develop mechanical work holding technologies, and investigate the application of new technology, equipment, and procedures for new systems designs. Interaction with Electrical, Software, Technology, and Mechanical engineering is crucial to ensure designs are understood by all disciplines. The role requires designing using AutoCAD and Siemens NX (3D software) or comparable 3D design software. Additionally, the engineer will develop product cost models, identify cost reduction opportunities, and develop/improve MAG standard documentation. Responsibilities include creating mechanical Bills of Material, processing release of drawings and Bills of Material for manufacturing, and reviewing/approving changes. The engineer will generate and maintain appropriate records and reports, coordinate with the Mechanical Project Engineer for design review meetings, and support Mechanical Project Engineering with outside supplier lineups and other MAG departments. Assistance will be provided to the Mechanical Project Engineer for Service department support and field engineering services. The engineer must keep the Mechanical Project Engineer and Engineering Manager updated on job status, review mechanical designs with engineers prior to release, and adhere to quality, customs, foreign trade zone, and environmental processes and procedures. Staying up-to-date with new technology and continuing education in these areas is essential, as is defining training requirements and scheduling training events for new equipment designs.
