Mechanical Design Engineer Intern

Matic•Menlo Park, CA

About The Position

Matic is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer Intern to contribute to the design and production of its home floor-cleaning robots. With support from experienced engineers, the intern will own parts and sub-assemblies from concept through high-volume production. The role offers hands-on experience with hardware that is already shipping to customers, including opportunities to see designs used in real homes. The intern will design and prototype components, test them for performance and durability, support production readiness, and work with internal teams and manufacturing partners. The position spans CAD and concept work as well as test fixtures, tolerance studies, life-test troubleshooting, returned-unit teardowns, drawing updates, supplier work, and production documentation. Matic describes its team as small, collaborative, fast-paced, and focused on solving difficult product problems; the intern will receive support and feedback while taking on meaningful work.

Requirements

  • Have personally designed and built parts or assemblies through internships, project teams, research, or personal projects, and be able to explain the design decisions.
  • Be familiar with high-volume manufacturing processes such as injection molding, die casting, stamping, or metal injection molding, and interested in learning how they shape design.
  • Understand tolerances and how individual part dimensions affect an assembly.
  • Be familiar with engineering drawings and basic GD&T.
  • Have proficiency in SolidWorks and experience using CAD to build real hardware.
  • Take a hands-on approach to prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Be able to reason from a failure to a possible design or manufacturing cause.
  • Be comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment where problems may be addressed by building and testing.
  • Currently pursue a degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical field, or demonstrate equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Be motivated to help colleagues, eager to learn outside familiar areas, enjoy diagnosing complex technical issues, and take pride in attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with FEA.
  • Prior experience with PDM/PLM.
  • Prior experience with production hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Design parts and sub-assemblies within a defined architecture and help carry them through to mass production.
  • Build prototypes, test them, and iterate on designs.
  • Run component-level testing for performance, durability, and part-to-part variability.
  • Help write and execute accelerated test plans to predict field behavior.
  • Create production-ready 2D drawings with guidance and review from the team.
  • Work with engineers, vendors, and contract manufacturers on design-for-manufacturing feedback, tooling reviews, and first article inspection.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering, firmware, software, and industrial design teams to balance parts against the rest of the system.
  • Build test fixtures, run tolerance studies, troubleshoot life tests, tear down returned units, update drawings, and learn how parts move from design to production.
  • Contribute to troubleshooting and other work that supports the team and product, including work outside the intern's immediate scope.
