About The Position

As a Mechanical Automation Engineer II, you will be part of our Automation Team responsible for designing and building custom automation equipment for manufacturing CommScope’s fiber optic products. You will work closely with manufacturing sites to design custom manufacturing equipment to improve quality, increase capacity, and reduce manufacturing costs. Requirements

  • BS degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Ability to travel to global production locations to support project intake, development, and deployment, up to 15%
  • Have experience with SolidWorks 3D CAD
  • Possess great mechanical aptitude with the ability to read and understand 2D prints
  • Demonstrate proficiency with current MS Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Project
  • Be self-driven and highly motivated with a strong sense of ownership and urgency
  • Candidates should enjoy working directly with hardware and be comfortable in a lab or shop environment
  • Exhibit excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate in a global organization
  • Possess unrestricted work authorization and does not require future sponsorship

Nice To Haves

  • Have experience with PTC Creo
  • Have experience with SolidWorks PDM for CAD data management
  • Have experience in process development and manufacturing qualifications
  • Have strong Computer Skills and the ability to quickly adapt to changes with AI
  • Have prior new process development experience
  • Able to read and interpret electrical prints and codes

Responsibilities

  • Produce creative concepts for machines and tooling designs to improve quality, cycle time, and reduce manufacturing costs
  • Demonstrate innovation through unique ideas and propose them to the team.
  • Deliver new concepts through brainstorming machine designs, component research, hands-on bench testing, and feasibility testing
  • Develop, build, and test semi-automated equipment for fiber optics manufacturing
  • Hands-on bench testing and iterative prototyping are core to this role
  • Maintain an appetite for learning and stay up to date on the latest technology trends and industry standards
  • Work with other mechanical engineers in the team to develop and implement work instructions for the standardization of mechanical design processes
  • Lead direct engagement with manufacturing sites to understand real-world constraints and opportunities for scoping of new designs
  • Design equipment that enables ease of manufacturability, assembly, and end use
  • Work cross-functionally with electrical, process, and manufacturing engineers to ensure seamless integration of automation systems
  • Create complete design documentation packages including drawings, BOMs, assembly instructions, and maintenance instructions
  • Conduct commercial component selection such as pneumatics, electric actuators, sensors, and other automation components based on engineering principles
  • Perform hands-on work including assembly, setup, calibration, process development, testing, and qualifications of equipment
  • Both lead and participate in design reviews and feedback loops with global teams
  • Take ownership of projects from ideation through build and qualification
  • Analyze data using Excel or Minitab to assess processes performance during equipment development/qualification
