2027 BS/MS Graduate - Mechanical/Aerospace Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a 2027 bachelor's or master's graduate in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or a related field, to help develop mechanical and electromechanical systems. The engineer will work with engineers and scientists who design, analyze, and test systems across APL mission areas, contributing robust mechanical solutions to challenging problems in a collaborative environment. The role focuses on building models and analyzing static and dynamic events, potentially including blast, impact, penetration, structural strength, fluid dynamics, fluid-structure interaction, and material model calibration. The engineer will choose among advanced software tools to address each problem, collaborate regularly with engineers, designers, fabricators, and scientists, prepare files and documentation to support fabrication, and present results to team members.

Requirements

  • Graduating with a bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Passion for developing physics-based simulations and applying data analysis to solve problems, potentially demonstrated through class projects, graduate research, or a prior internship.
  • Ability to obtain an interim Secret security clearance before reporting and ultimately acquire a full Secret clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship and eligibility to access classified information.

Nice To Haves

  • Pursuing dual degrees and/or having internship experience in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • CAD experience with SolidWorks or Creo Parametric.
  • Experience performing large-scale simulations on high-performance computing systems.
  • Experience using LS-DYNA, ABAQUS, or equivalent advanced finite element analysis software.

Responsibilities

  • Build models and perform analysis of static and dynamic events, potentially including blast, impact, penetration, structural strength, fluid dynamics, fluid-structure interaction, and material model calibration.
  • Select and use advanced software tools to find suitable solutions to engineering problems.
  • Collaborate daily with engineers, designers, fabricators, and scientists.
  • Generate files and documentation needed to facilitate fabrication of designs.
  • Give presentations to communicate results to team members.
