About The Position

This is a skilled mechanic position in the County Highway Department. Employees in this class work under general supervision performing skilled mechanical work installing, assembling, testing, maintaining and repairing a variety of highway construction and equipment. Employees in this class often make independent decisions and judgments in exercising the skills of the trade. Employees will work on diesel and gasoline powered equipment and vehicles, with one or the other being a primary assignment. Hiring decisions will be made based on primary need at time of hiring.

Requirements

  • Class A CDL required.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school, or GED.
  • A combination of training at a technical school in gas and diesel engines along with paid work experience as a diesel mechanic. The combined education and experience must equal 3 years or more.
  • Valid Wisconsin drivers license and good driving record.
  • Must obtain Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake, combination vehicle and tanker endorsements within six-months from start date of employment.
  • Must have own mechanic's tools.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screen due to CDL requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for experience working on diesel powered heavy equipment or preference for experience working on gasoline powered automobiles/light trucks will be an applicant screening factor based on needs at time of recruitment.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium Heavy Duty Truck Technician Certification or Automotive Technician Certification preferred.
  • Computer skills to utilize parts and equipment repair manuals on CD-ROM.
  • Previous experience doing road grading/snow plowing is desired.
  • Availability to work overtime as needed.
  • May consider other relevant combination of experience and training.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, assembles, tests, adjusts, maintains and repairs machines or mechanical apparatus and equipment.
  • Removes worn or broken parts and replaces with new or repaired parts.
  • Oils, cleans, maintains and performs repair work on gas and diesel engines and electric motors.
  • Troubleshoots hydraulic and electrical problems, repairs tires.
  • Solders, welds or forges metal.
  • For testing purposes or as part of the job, operates various types of machines, appliances and equipment.
  • Uses diagnostic software and hardware to test, repair, and program all types of equipment and attachments.
  • Documents daily work in the shop fleet management software and the shop payroll system.
  • Works safely and follows safety practices and standards of the facility; responsible for reporting or correcting any existing or potential safety or accident hazard.
  • In this public service position, employee is required to be courteous, cooperative and respectful at all times, with the public and clients.
  • Establishes and maintains a courteous, cooperative and respectful working relationship with other employees, supervisors and public officials.
  • Employee is expected to report to work when scheduled, with minimum use of sick leave, to build up sick leave balance for income protection for unexpected illness.
