About The Position

Performs maintenance and repair of City-owned vehicles and equipment; maintains maintenance records and recommends purchase of needed supplies. Receives general supervision from the Fleet Supervisor and occasionally the Working Foreman. This is a non-exempt position within Local Union #436 - Teamsters, requiring 40 hours per week, with potential for overtime.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • One (1) to three (3) years experience with automotive and truck repairs.
  • Extensive knowledge of engines and mechanical parts.
  • Ability to weld and paint vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems.
  • Ability to work in uncomfortable surroundings.
  • Ability to work overtime is required.
  • Must possess a valid Ohio Commercial Drivers License, preferably CDL Class A.
  • Ability to see, identify and distinguish hand signals in order to communicate with co-workers using heavy or noisy equipment.
  • Ability to hear and possess an audible voice for two-way communication with flagmen working in congested roadways to control traffic.
  • Ability to climb into and out of confined spaces, climb a ladder, and lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Ability to work in unsanitary or hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to follow all safety regulations.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to effectively work and communicate with co-workers, public officials and the general public.
  • Ability to provide effective supervision.
  • Ability to maintain effective records.
  • Knowledge of required safety practices, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work all sorts of hours and overtime situations.
  • Ability to work as a team and to work alone when asked (i.e. plowing for many hours).
  • Ability to follow instructions from your supervisor and to work as directed in all situations and all duties as assigned as a Union Maintenance Worker.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Master Mechanic.
  • Any other relevant ASE Certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance and repair of City-owned vehicles and equipment; diagnoses problems.
  • Tests, disassembles, adjusts, replaces, repairs, welds, paints, and/or reassembles any equipment or unit such as engines, electrical systems, fuel systems, brake systems, cooling systems, drive train, body and chassis.
  • Maintains maintenance and repair records on vehicles and equipment.
  • Trains, assigns tasks, monitors and evaluates work of Assistant Mechanic.
  • Orders and picks up necessary replacement parts or materials for repairing and maintaining vehicles and equipment.
  • Furnishes and maintains all personally owned tools and equipment needed to perform work except for air compressors, welders, torches, tire machine, jacks, lifts, parts cleaner and battery charger.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
