About The Position

The position of the Mechanic is to maintain, diagnose and repair fleet vehicles, specializing on buses. The mechanic is responsible for repairing and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, striving toward maximum reliability, functionality and safety.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a mechanic preferred.
  • Must have and maintain an excellent Driver’s License, valid CDL preferred. CDL license required preceding the 5th month of employment as a mechanic.
  • Must have knowledge of technical and diagnostic equipment, including computer comprehension.
  • Must have a complete set of hand tools, in accordance with the department’s tools list.
  • Must be able to work any scheduled hours such as dayshift, nightshift, weekends, holidays, floater and overtime as needed.
  • Must have the ability to operate all mechanical equipment.
  • Must be able to document repairs, and diagnosis on assigned transit vehicles.
  • Must have a basic understanding of the design, adjustment, overhaul operation and maintenance of transmissions, heavy-duty engines and other fleet components.
  • Required to read schematics, maintenance manuals and interpret safety documents.
  • Must have excellent communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for preventative maintenance such as changing tires, batteries, lights, controls, safety equipment, power steering, fluids, filters, etc.
  • Responsible for fleet condition by performing diagnostic testing repairs and rebuild of fleet vehicle components such as engines, transmissions, brake systems, electrical, mechanical, internal and external components, etc.
  • Responsible for scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, including body repairs, HVAC systems, electrical systems, steering, suspension systems, brake systems and drivetrain components.
  • Responsible for DOT inspections and document results to insure that vehicles meet N.Y. State DOT regulations.
  • Performs and analyzes diagnostic testing.
  • Responsible for operating vehicles while in strict compliance with Company policies, directives, and procedures and all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Conducts road tests to ensure fleet vehicles are operating in a safe and reliable manner, salt roads and participates in snow removal as needed.
  • Performs on-the-road repairs and road calls when necessary.
  • Effectively communicates with supervisors regarding equipment concerns and observations.
  • Utilizes various types of tools such as hand and power tools to perform repairs.
  • Maintains and repairs shop equipment as needed.
  • Responsible for performing all tasks in a safe manner, in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
  • Interprets and applies knowledge from vehicle service manual and schematics to assist in the completion of repairs.
  • Performs system upgrades, campaigns and modifications on fleet vehicles as needed.
  • Participates in safety and educational training as required.
  • Assists fellow mechanics with repairs as needed.
  • Maintains equipment and work space safety and cleanliness
