About The Position

Gleason Corporation is seeking a Mechanic to assemble and test high-precision direct-drive and gear-driven machine tool spindle assemblies. The work involves interpreting mechanical engineering drawings, bills of materials, work instructions, and specifications, and handling mechanical tolerances ranging from 0.010 to 0.00005 inch. Mechanics work independently with support from manufacturing engineering, team leads, materials personnel, quality engineers, and supervision in an environmentally controlled assembly area. The position has three responsibility levels. Level I focuses on cleaning components, inspecting them, following build instructions and procedures, organizing components, communicating issues, and using power tools safely. Level II adds operation of trim-cell equipment and a balancer, assembly of critical subassemblies and a wider variety of spindle or ball-screw assemblies, and training new hires or contractors. Level III includes collaborating with Engineering on spindle development and build and test procedures, identifying design issues and proposing solutions, developing best practices, working across a broad variety of spindle and ball-screw assemblies, and exercising a high level of quality control. The role is based in a manufacturing environment. Work may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions, heights, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, outdoor weather, extreme heat, electrical shock risk, vibration, and usually loud noise. The job requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, hand use, and reaching; occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, and hearing; and lifting or moving up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 40 pounds occasionally. Lift assistance is required for objects over 40 pounds. No travel is required.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated competency and interest in complex mechanical assembly.
  • High degree of mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Ability to think critically and solve complex mechanical problems.
  • Experience reading and understanding engineering drawings, models, work instructions, and specifications.
  • Experience working with part and assembly tolerances below 0.010 inch.
  • Understanding of shop math, including calculating stack-ups and match-ground fits.
  • Ability to verify component conformance using precision gauges, micrometers, and other measuring instruments.
  • Organization, systematic work habits, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn from others and follow explicit instructions.
  • Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented approach and a high level of accountability and pride in work.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with precision assemblies.
  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and the Internet.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including frequent lifting or moving of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting or moving of up to 40 pounds; proper lift assistance is required for objects over 40 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of machine tool spindles.
  • SAP experience.
  • Relevant experience such as precision machining, tool and die making, instrument making, or engine mechanics.
  • Precision-assembly experience such as spindle assembly, machine building, engine building, gunsmithing, or automotive technology.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret mechanical engineering drawings, models, bills of materials, work instructions, and specifications.
  • Align components for assembly manually or with a hoist, and fasten them using bolts, screws, dowels, and hand tools.
  • Verify alignment and tolerances of moving parts using measuring instruments such as dial indicators and thickness gauges.
  • Assemble, set up, and operate machines to verify function, capabilities, and conformance to customer specifications.
  • Form and fasten piping, fixtures, and attachments needed to service machines with air, water, and oil.
  • Record and track inspection records during the build cycle.
  • Clean and wash components; verify component conformance using precision gauges, micrometers, and other measuring instruments.
  • Follow inspection sheets, build instructions, procedures, and best practices; collect and organize components according to bills of materials and pick sheets.
  • Identify and communicate build issues to quality, engineering, and the group leader.
  • Use power tools safely and responsibly and maintain a clean work area in accordance with 5S standards.
  • Train and demonstrate mechanical assembly competency on trained assemblies; at higher levels, train new hires and contractors.
  • At higher levels, operate trim-cell equipment and a balancer, build critical subassemblies, and assemble a variety of spindle and/or ball-screw families.
  • Work with Engineering on spindle development and build and test procedures; identify potential design issues and suggest solutions.
  • Help develop best practices and demonstrate a high level of quality control.
  • Follow company and department processes and procedures, and perform other duties as requested by a manager or supervisor.
