About The Position

The Bruce Company, a local, family-run landscaping and construction company with 70 years of history, is seeking a Shop Mechanic. This role is ideal for someone with experience as a shop mechanic or in automotive service, with a preference for those who have worked with heavy equipment or in the landscape or construction industries. The Shop Mechanic will be responsible for diagnosing, servicing, and repairing department trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment, as well as performing basic building maintenance for the shop, ensuring all equipment is maintained and operational to support customer service.

Requirements

  • At least 1-3 years of experience as a Service Technician or Mechanic, with knowledge of automotive and small engines.
  • Experience working on heavy equipment such as bobcats, loaders, and skid steers used in landscape installation is required.
  • Proficiency in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmission.
  • Basic computer skills to update computerized work orders and systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical issues efficiently.
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team, following written and oral instructions.
  • Stands and walks for long periods throughout the day.
  • Frequently lifts objects from the ground and consistently lifts up to 50 pounds; occasionally lifts and carries weights of up to 75 pounds or more.
  • Regularly squats, stoops, or kneels and extends arms overhead.
  • Requires fine motor skills for the use of small equipment and hand tools.
  • A valid United States driver’s license with a good driving record is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Working on heavy equipment or in the Landscape or Construction industry is a plus.
  • A technical degree or certificate in automotive repair or a related field, or equivalent work experience is a plus.
  • A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is helpful.
  • Previous experience in metal fabrication is preferred.
  • Experience operating trenchers, excavators, loaders, bobcats, or skid steers is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Service department trucks, tractors, landscape management equipment, and perform automotive & heavy truck repairs.
  • Conduct general repairs of department equipment.
  • Fabricate metal parts and perform welding as necessary.
  • Provide emergency services for vehicles and landscape management equipment.
  • Keep mechanical skills updated for servicing various types of equipment.
  • Order parts as needed for repairs, with Shop Manager’s approval when required.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with co-workers in the shop and other departments.
  • Complete work orders to properly document service and repair activities.
  • Perform general building maintenance tasks as assigned.
  • Assist with snow removal during the winter months.
  • Ensure company vehicles are serviced promptly to enable continuous customer service.
  • Report any major mechanical problems or safety concerns to the Shop Manager.
  • Accurately record daily work hours in the company’s time system.
  • Lead by example and provide guidance on policies and procedures for other shop employees, including attendance, conduct, and dress code.
  • Operate equipment such as trucks, bobcats, compactors, trenchers, and masonry saws.
  • Keep workstations and equipment clean and organized.
  • Ensure adherence to company safety policies and procedures at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or manager.
