Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in motor vehicle maintenance and repair work.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance and repair techniques and of safety practices and principles.
  • Skill in the use of tools, machines, and testing instruments used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions, and to locate and diagnose defective mechanical operations.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional technical courses in motor vehicle maintenance and repair are preferred.
  • May require certification(s) from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence.
  • May require a Safety Inspector license.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine motor vehicle maintenance and repair work.
  • Replaces or repairs worn or broken parts.
  • Performs preventive maintenance activities.
  • Services motor vehicle equipment and related gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel engine-powered equipment.
  • Exchanges, rebuilds, and overhauls motors, transmissions, carburetors, and other motor vehicle components and systems.
  • Checks and repairs electrical and cooling systems.
  • Performs oil and filter changes, transmission service, brake and suspension repair, schedules tire installation and repair, wheel alignments, air conditioning diagnosis and repair, state vehicle inspections, and other maintenance activities.
  • Performs minor engine tune-ups and makes required adjustments on motor vehicle’s motors and engines.
  • Performs motor vehicle body repair work and touch up painting.
  • Performs safety and emissions inspections.
  • Tests motors and engines for satisfactory performance.
  • Installs after-market accessories and equipment.
  • Maintains records of work performed and parts used.
  • Uses on-board or hand-held electronic diagnostic equipment and other specialized tools and equipment to isolate and adjust malfunctions.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
