Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Two (2) years’ experience in motor vehicle maintenance and repair work.
Requires a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance and repair techniques and of safety practices and principles.
Skill in the use of tools, machines, and testing instruments used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
Ability to follow instructions, and to locate and diagnose defective mechanical operations.
Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.

Nice To Haves

Additional technical courses in motor vehicle maintenance and repair are preferred.
May require certification(s) from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence.
May require a Safety Inspector license.

Responsibilities

Performs routine motor vehicle maintenance and repair work.
Replaces or repairs worn or broken parts.
Performs preventive maintenance activities.
Services motor vehicle equipment and related gasoline, diesel, or alternative fuel engine-powered equipment.
Exchanges, rebuilds, and overhauls motors, transmissions, carburetors, and other motor vehicle components and systems.
Checks and repairs electrical and cooling systems.
Performs oil and filter changes, transmission service, brake and suspension repair, schedules tire installation and repair, wheel alignments, air conditioning diagnosis and repair, state vehicle inspections, and other maintenance activities.
Performs minor engine tune-ups and makes required adjustments on motor vehicle’s motors and engines.
Performs motor vehicle body repair work and touch up painting.
Performs safety and emissions inspections.
Tests motors and engines for satisfactory performance.
Installs after-market accessories and equipment.
Maintains records of work performed and parts used.
Uses on-board or hand-held electronic diagnostic equipment and other specialized tools and equipment to isolate and adjust malfunctions.
Performs related work as assigned.
