About The Position

Performs skilled mechanical evaluations, repairs and preventative maintenance activities on city equipment and vehicles. Assists with snow and ice control operations. Provides maintenance and labor support for other Public Works Divisions. Reports to the Deputy Director of Public Works. We are looking to fill one vacancy in the Public Works Department. The hiring hourly rate for the position is based on contractual language and certifications. We anticipate the starting range at $38.85 per hour but will increase the range based on certifications. Requirements

Graduation from an accredited vocational training school in auto/truck mechanics or related field.
Three years mechanic experience.
Must possess a valid Minnesota Class B (CDL) driver's license or obtain within six months of employment.
Must have computer skills including knowledge of on-line diagnostic software and MS Office or similar applications.
Must be able to read and understand correspondence, memoranda, and directives, and follow such directives.
Must have the ability to communicate effectively with persons who do not speak English and are from a variety of different cultures.
Ability to read labeling on products in accordance with safety regulations.
Must be able to assertively control conversations in order to quickly and accurately gather pertinent information and be able to communicate this information professionally and precisely to the proper recipient.
Ability to read and understand repair manuals, automotive trade journals, and technical reports.
Must be able to act in a decisive manner, using good judgment.
Must be able to assess problems and situations, anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives.
Must have knowledge of the utilization of appropriate resources and the willingness to communicate the use of available resources.
Must be able to work in cooperation with other staff members.

Must be certified as a D.O.T. vehicle inspector or obtain within six months of employment.
Must have considerable knowledge of principles of the operation of gasoline and diesel engines.
Ability to properly use tools and electronic diagnostic equipment.
Knowledge of metal fabrication and welding techniques and practices.
Ability to operate all types of equipment such as trucks up to 60,000 GVWR, farm-type tractors, and all types of construction equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets and parks.
Considerable knowledge of automotive electronic systems.
Knowledge of basic computer operations and software that relate to vehicle maintenance systems.
Basic knowledge of math calculations and problem-solving including multiplication and division as well as using fractions.
Must have considerable knowledge of hydraulic, air-over hydraulic, electric/hydraulic control systems and their operation.

Nice To Haves

Proven experience pertaining to diagnosing and repairing vehicle drive-ability issues.
Strong understanding and trouble-shooting experience of electrical and electronic systems for autos and light trucks.
Diesel truck mechanic experience.
ASE certification for truck and/or auto.
Certified as a D.O.T. vehicle inspector.
In addition to English, the ability to speak, read and/or write non-English languages (including sign language).

Responsibilities

Performs repairs, including major overhauls, on all types of equipment such as trucks up to 60,000 GVWR, farm type tractors, various types of equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets and parks, and other city vehicles including police and fire equipment.
Performs major service work on fuel, hydraulic, electrical, exhaust, suspension, steering, braking, drive train.
Fabricates parts, mountings and other accessories using metal fabrication and welding techniques and practices.
Installs electrical and other type accessories in City-owned and operated equipment.
Performs minor body and fender work, welding and/or prefabricating as required.
Performs D.O.T. annual inspections.
Recommends repair or replacement of parts and/or entire equipment units.
Prepares repair order form for each job assigned in a complete and accurate manner.
Assists in maintaining parts inventory, ordering of replacement parts and accessories.
Performs computer-based diagnostics of equipment, filing and/or completion of repair orders on-line and other computer-based applications.
Maintains work area and tools in clean and workable fashion.
Contacts parts and/or equipment dealers to obtain information regarding parts or equipment as needed.
Assists in gathering information for new equipment or specification development for the purchase of new equipment.
Remains knowledgeable of new developments and innovations in equipment maintenance and parts design and provide input regarding methods by which new techniques and new practices could benefit City operations.
Operates City trucks and other pieces of equipment to support street maintenance operations or performs other maintenance functions as assigned by supervisor.
Remains knowledgeable of oil and lubrication standards and maintenance requirements for the City vehicle fleet.
Enters work orders, parts used, etc. into PubWorks, the City’s fleet management software.
Remains knowledgeable of current computer-aided diagnostic equipment and its proper uses.
Remains knowledgeable of and is able to implement and carry out preventative maintenance programs.
Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
