About The Position

The Mechanic is responsible for performing a wide range of diagnostics, repairs and maintenance on school buses and other company vehicles. This role requires strong technical knowledge, diagnostic skills, and the ability to maintain vehicles in compliance with DOT regulations. The mechanic will also be responsible for maintaining shop equipment, inventory, and accurate records.

Requirements

Strong technical knowledge acquired through education or work experience.
Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License with passenger, school bus and air brake endorsements.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Knowledge of MNDOT inspection requirements.
Ability to perform diesel engine troubleshooting, overhaul procedures, and tune-ups on both mechanical and electronic engines.
Ability to perform maintenance and repair on electrical and electronic systems, steering and suspension, and air and hydraulic brake systems.
Ability to diagnose, repair, and overhaul clutches, transmissions, and drive axles.
Ability to adhere to all safety practices.
Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
Reliability and capability of working independently.
Strong diagnostic skills to identify service requirements.
Attentiveness to detail.
Tact and courtesy to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate with diverse groups.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

Perform diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on school buses and company vehicles.
Conduct inspections and diagnostic tests to determine vehicle condition and identify worn or damaged parts.
Complete preventative maintenance to ensure vehicles are DOT compliant.
Install and adjust components, parts, and systems including power and drive trains, electrical, fuel, exhaust, braking, steering, and hydraulics.
Perform air/hydraulic brake maintenance and adjustments.
Conduct test drives and visual inspections to verify vehicle performance.
Maintain vehicle records by creating service and repair orders.
Ensure all shop equipment is maintained and in good operating condition.
Manage inventory of supplies, including placing orders and receiving inventory.
Participate in educational opportunities and read technical publications to maintain job knowledge.
Keep the shop clean and organized.
Update shop manager/site manager on repairs and maintenance status.
Attend meetings, in-service training, and workshops.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
