About The Position

The Mechanic/Welder 2/Class (Cane Harvesting) is responsible for performing journey-level mechanical and welding work on a variety of sugarcane harvesting equipment. This includes inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining harvesters, trucks, trailers, and other equipment; performing welding work on repairs and maintenance projects; and training and providing work direction to assigned staff. A welding test will be conducted as part of the hiring process. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides hands-on guidance and mentorship to team members, serving as a bridge between employees and supervisors. Supports daily operations by addressing challenges, fostering collaboration, and ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures. Promotes a positive work environment, assists in employee development, and helps drive team success.

Requirements

  • Must be proficient in all aspects of SMAW(stick), GMAW(MIG), and GTAW(TIG) welding, oxyacetylene welding and cutting, and air carbon arc cutting.
  • Must be able to repair, fabricate, hard face, and assemble complete structures or components of equipment, utilizing layouts and/or blueprints following industry accepted standards.
  • Ability to accurately use metal forming, cutting, grinding, and shaping tools such as presses, punches, brakes, pipe benders, threaders, optical tracing tables, grinders, and drills, in order to bend, shape, and cut parts to be welded, bolted, screwed, or riveted together.
  • Must be able to read manuals, blueprints, schematics, and diagrams.
  • Must have own set of tools.
  • Must have high mechanical aptitude and experience in repairing harvesting equipment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to comprehend and convey mechanical information.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to adapt quickly to a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
  • Regular Class “E” Driver’s License
  • High school diploma (or GED) mechanically inclined at least five (5) years of mechanical experience mobile equipment, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of agricultural equipment.
  • Regular attendance is required during your schedule shift.
  • Must be able to work in hot, cold, wet, humid, dusty, and foggy working conditions depending on weather.
  • Sitting, Walking, Standing, Kneeling, Crawling, Climbing, and Reaching Lifting occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual and Biliterate – English and Spanish, preferred.
  • American Welding Society welding certification
  • ASE Certified (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Perform journey-level mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a variety of sugarcane harvesting equipment, including harvesters, trucks, trailers, and other equipment.
  • Perform journey-level welding work in the repair and maintenance projects of sugarcane harvesting equipment.
  • Evaluate maintenance, servicing, and repair needs and establish repair priorities.
  • Read and interpret schematics and diagrams.
  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical malfunctions.
  • Determine necessary parts for repair.
  • Requisition equipment, tools, parts, and materials according to established procedures.
  • Train and provide work direction to assigned staff.
  • Prioritize, schedule, and assign the work to shop staff.
  • Regularly assess completed tasks and ongoing projects to verify adherence to established procedures and work order specifications.
  • Comply with all safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs other related projects and assignments as business dictates.
