About The Position

The Town of Cary is recruiting a Mechanic/Operator I for its North Cary Water Reclamation Facility. This is primarily a mechanic position focused on maintaining and repairing facility equipment and systems, with treatment plant operator duties performed on a fill-in basis when needed. The role performs technical and skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the water reclamation facility and contributes to the Town’s environmental stewardship and protection of public health. Employees primarily assigned to maintenance work a normal 8-hour shift, with occasional callback and stand-by duties for emergency maintenance and operational issues. Employees primarily assigned to operations work 12-hour shifts. This vacancy is a mechanic position, not an operator position. The position works under the regular supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor. Facility positions are critical positions, so employees must report during adverse weather or other emergencies to maintain equipment or assist with Town operations. Employees must live within 50 miles of the facility and be able to respond within one hour when fulfilling callback or stand-by duties. Water Reclamation Facility positions are part of an established career ladder program. Eligible employees who demonstrate increasing knowledge, skills, and abilities may advance; depending on career-ladder attainment, an employee may have lead-worker duties over other plant personnel. The anticipated hiring range is $56,867.20–$66,185.60, with potentially higher starting pay for applicants with relevant certifications and experience.
