About The Position

Under general supervision, employee will perform complex duties in the repair and maintenance of school transportation vehicles, including school buses, activity buses and other fleet vehicles.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of four years previous mechanical experience.
  • NC School Bus License/CDL required with Tanker, Passenger and School Bus Endorsements.
  • NC School Bus 30-day Inspection license also required.
  • Must be available early morning and after hours if needed.
  • Four years repairing automotive, diesel, construction, or specialized equipment.
  • Ability to obtain a valid North Carolina commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class A with endorsements (N-tanker, P-passenger, S-school bus).
  • Ability to obtain North Carolina School Bus Inspection Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a valid DOT medical certificate.
  • Commercial driver license (CDL) holders and applicants must meet the medical qualifications set by the N.C. General Statute Medical Qualifications Standards Applicable to Commercial Drivers.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals and/or groups.
  • Must be able to converse and collaborate with others, not just having the ability to assign or follow tasks.
  • Must be adaptable to performing in stressful and emergency situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Class A CDL with endorsements (N-tanker, P-passenger, S-school bus).
  • Valid DOT medical certification.
  • Diesel certification degree from a technical college.

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly safety inspections of all fleet vehicles, including school and activity buses, as mandated by NCDPI and in accordance with the North Carolina School Transportation Fleet Manual.
  • Complete scheduled maintenance on time and submit required paperwork to the supervisor daily.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance of school buses and related fleet/equipment, both roadside and onsite.
  • Diagnose, repair, and overhaul brakes, electrical systems, fuel systems, transmissions, A/C systems, differentials, and front and rear axle assemblies And DEF system.
  • Participate in training onsite and travel for training.
  • Perform limited body repairs, including metal work.
  • Effectively produce written correspondence across various communication, including cell phone and email.
  • Be available for road calls after hours.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized workspace, including the service truck and garage.
  • Check roads for snow and flooding conditions, which can often start at 4:00 am.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
