About The Position

The Mechanic Helper assists the Lead Mechanic in performing a full range of skilled mechanical maintenance, diagnostic, inspection, and repair duties on passenger shuttle buses. This role involves inspecting, diagnosing, adjusting, and repairing diesel-powered buses, performing general installation, repair, replacement, and adjustment of various vehicle components, and executing a prescribed preventative maintenance program on the bus fleet. The position also requires road testing vehicles after repairs, adhering to safe work practices, and maintaining an inventory of parts and supplies. Additionally, the Mechanic Helper is responsible for maintaining a clean work area and ensuring the upkeep of shop facilities and equipment.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must possess valid, unexpired driver's license
  • High School Diploma, GED or suitable equivalent is required
  • Procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive and shuttle buses.
  • Laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to shuttle bus operations and pupil transportation, including DOT compliance.
  • Procedures of recycling and disposing of hazardous waste from motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of prior mechanical experience is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Lead Mechanic in performing skilled mechanical maintenance, diagnostic, inspection, and repair duties on passenger shuttle buses.
  • Inspect, diagnose, adjust, and repair diesel-powered buses.
  • Perform general installation, repair, replacement, and adjustment of bearings, ignitions, transmissions, differentials, axles, steering mechanisms, drive shafts, fenders, radiators, and front and rear suspension systems.
  • Perform a prescribed preventative maintenance program on the bus fleet.
  • Road test vehicles after work has been completed.
  • Perform work in adherence to safe work practices and procedures and in compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  • Maintain inventory of parts and supplies on hand for the repair of vehicles.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
  • Maintain and repair shop facilities and equipment.
  • Patch and install seat covers and other accessories.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain records of technical knowledge regarding equipment and concepts.
  • Handle heavy workload of calls.
  • Inform customer when arriving at or leaving the job and when planning to return.
  • Manage workload and job scheduling.
  • Promptly and accurately complete all required paperwork.
  • Obtain customer signature on all service reports (before work begins when performing spot jobs).
  • Keep manager informed of customer feedback.
  • Communicate effectively and promptly.
  • Provide technical training and knowledge as needed to client, customer and team.
  • Collaborate with and across multiple departments and representatives within the Company.
  • When the Supervisor is present, the lead worker may also be responsible for directing smaller work groups.
  • Report team performance issues to the Supervisor.
