About The Position

Provides semi-skilled labor to repair and maintain gasoline, compressed natural gas, hydrogen fuel cell, battery electric buses, paratransit vehicles and other motorized equipment in compliance with established procedures and maintenance standards to ensure the safety and reliability of the District’s fleet vehicles. This is a journey-level classification requiring the successful performance of the majority of assigned job tasks independently and consistent with established work standards and District protocols.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent to graduation from high school (GED).
Possess a valid California Driver’s License with driving record acceptable to the District, along with three (3) years of driving experience.
Prior experience performing auto/bus vehicle mechanic work is highly desirable.
Ability to obtain California Commercial Class “B” Driver’s license with air brake and passenger endorsements within 6 months of position appointment.
Ability to provide own hand tools and storage cabinet.
Ability to obtain and maintain a certificate to operate a forklift.
Ability to obtain and maintain a CNG / Hydrogen Tank Inspection Certification.
Ability obtain and maintain a T.I.A. Commercial Tire Certification.
Must possess and maintain an ASE Transit Bus Air Brake (H4) and Preventative Maintenance (H8) Transit Bus certifications.
Requisite reading, mathematical, comprehension and written language skills in order to perform the essential requirements of the job.
Adequate computer skills and ability to accurately record vehicle maintenance records electronically.
Ability to follow instructions from Supervision and comprehend written procedures to complete work tasks.
Ability to demonstrate a high degree of determination and commitment to personal and professional development and learning.
Ability to learn effective use of vehicle diagnostic software applications.
Principles of the mechanics of internal combustion engines
Methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment
Safe driving practices
Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work
The use of shop equipment and tools to make necessary repairs.

Prior experience performing auto/bus vehicle mechanic work is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

Repair and maintain CNG, Hydrogen fuel cell, and gasoline powered buses and other assigned transportation equipment
Steam clean equipment
Perform preventative maintenance
Assist in the repair of equipment
Mount and dismount tires
Adjust brakes
Install batteries, tires, and wiring
Grease and service equipment
Change oil and oil filters
Fuel buses and vehicles.
Service and perform simple heavy duty mechanical work
Start-up buses daily to ensure good running condition prior to vehicle placement into service.
Troubleshoot and repair vehicle systems using various diagnostic equipment in accordance with all OEM and regulatory requirements.
Comply with the Agency Safety Plan (ASP) regarding maintenance operations requirements, including compliance with CalOSHA, and other regulatory requirements related to assigned duties and responsibilities.
Report unsafe conditions to management regarding workplace safety compliance.
Correctly complete required documents related to equipment repairs, parts requisitions and other pertinent maintenance forms and required department records.
Communicate effectively with drivers, dispatchers and other personnel to promote safe and efficient handling of service calls, vehicle breakdowns and bus exchanges as needed to support bus operations.
Handle radio communications and coordinate road calls, when required/as needed.
Keep shop and work areas clean.
Pick up parts and materials from vendors.
Inspect shop equipment and report all unsafe equipment to a supervisor.
Maintain assigned Maintenance shop equipment.
Report to work based upon assigned shifts which may include early morning, overnights, weekends, and holidays.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
