About The Position

This is an entry-level mechanic assistant position providing maintenance for the MEI fleet, which includes diesel trucks, tractors, trailers, forklifts, Peterbilt and KW tractors, and Landoll/KS RGN flatbed trailers. The role involves performing routine maintenance, inspections, and diagnostic tests on diesel vehicles, with a focus on PM service, brake service, and hydraulic systems. The assistant will also be responsible for maintaining equipment availability, verifying vehicle performance, annotating service and repair records, managing shop equipment, controlling costs, and maintaining inventory. The position emphasizes teamwork, safety, honesty, integrity, professionalism, and delivering quality service.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum one (1) year proven fleet mechanic experience (Heavy Equipment and Vehicles)
  • Basic knowledge of operating equipment (Forklifts, man lifts, mobile platform lifts, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Perform entry-level mechanic work on diesel vehicles, including routine PM service, brake service, and hydraulic systems.
  • Conduct inspections and diagnostic tests to identify worn and damaged parts.
  • Maintain equipment availability by completing preventive maintenance schedules, installing component and part upgrades, controlling corrosion, and completing winterization procedures.
  • Verify vehicle performance by conducting test drives and adjusting controls and systems.
  • Maintain vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
  • Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for extensive repairs when necessary.
  • Contain costs by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options.
  • Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipt.
  • Enhance maintenance department and organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value.
  • Complete housekeeping duties in assigned area or project area daily and/or when needed.
