About The Position

The Mechanic Apprentice role is with Alaska Gold Company, LLC BSNC Regional Services, a subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation. This company provides essential services and support throughout the Bering Strait region, managing operations in community infrastructure development, transportation logistics, facility maintenance, and workforce housing. The Mechanic Apprentice will be based in Nome, AK, and will learn to perform routine preventive maintenance, diagnose mechanical issues under supervision, inspect equipment, and assist with repairs. The position involves hands-on training to develop proficiency in troubleshooting and repair techniques, aiming for journeyman-level competency. Responsibilities include maintaining records, ensuring a safe working environment, responding to service calls, assisting with parts inventory, and communicating effectively with team members. The role also requires participation in on-the-job training and classroom instruction as part of an apprenticeship program, and adherence to all company safety policies and regulatory requirements. This is a DOT covered/safety-sensitive role.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Heavey Equipment training or vocational certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Previous automotive repair experience preferred.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Lifting parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds or more.
  • Working with tools, machinery, heavy equipment, trailers, and vehicle components in a shop environment and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must always maintain a constant state of mental alertness.
  • Must always maintain a constant state of situational awareness.
  • Employees must provide a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC).
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Have acceptable background check results.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and fluid checks.
  • Learn to diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system issues under supervision.
  • Inspect equipment and vehicles to identify wear, damage, or potential safety concerns.
  • Assist with disassembly, repair, and reassembly of engines, transmissions, braking systems, and other mechanical components.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records, work orders, and parts documentation.
  • Clean and organize the shop, work areas, tools, and equipment to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Respond to service calls and assist with field repairs when required.
  • Develop proficiency in troubleshooting and repair techniques to progress toward journeyman-level competency.
  • Assist with parts inventory management, including identifying needed parts and stocking supplies.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, mechanics, and other team members regarding equipment status and repair needs.
  • Participate in on-the-job training and classroom instruction as required by the apprenticeship program.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Benefits

  • Wage/Salary Range: $26.00 - $28.00 / per hr.
