About The Position

The Mechanic A or B Level position is a temporary assignment expected to last 2 to 3 months. This role involves performing preventative maintenance inspections, diagnosing and repairing minor coach problems, and assisting other mechanics to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. The mechanic will perform inspections and repairs on various coach systems, utilize diagnostic equipment, and document work orders. This position requires flexibility to work in a 24/7 environment and adherence to safety and environmental commitments.

Requirements

  • One (1) year progressive heavy equipment maintenance required.
  • Entry level understanding of all systems onboard the fleet transportation vehicles.
  • Component/System understanding: Air Conditioning, Brakes, Engine, Transmission, Suspension and Steering, Electrical, Fuel, Lubrication, and Differentials.
  • Understanding all Preventive Maintenance Procedures: A, B, C.
  • Knowledge and use of proper safety equipment at all times.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Driver’s license required.
  • Experience with diagnostic computer equipment required.
  • Must have a basic understanding of the design, adjustment, overhaul of medium to heavy duty braking systems.
  • Must be able to work amid constant interruptions, have ability to prioritize and be detail oriented.
  • Must have good communication skills, ability to both verbally and in written format document questions and diagnostic information to management personnel.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities including working on top of coaches and lifting up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
  • Must be flexible and work in a 24/7 environment.
  • Must be able to obtain a CA Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B with passenger endorsement.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections on all types and classes of coaches following vehicle-specific checklists.
  • Reviews repair manuals and part manuals for aid in making minor repairs.
  • Conducts inspections and repairs including, but not limited to, ADA equipment, articulate joints, brakes, chassis, cooling systems, engines, interior/exterior lighting, gauges and controls, safety equipment, fire extinguishers and sensitive edges, tires, and transmissions.
  • Diagnoses all sub-components of a Transit coach using computer skills.
  • Inspects and verifies problems on coaches using various diagnostic equipment.
  • Cleans, repairs, and replaces coach equipment as required under supervision.
  • Tests coaches for proper working order, including road driving tests.
  • Fills out work orders specifying parts and labor.
  • Assists mechanic A and mechanic B with repair work.
  • Sweeps and cleans work area, performs general housekeeping, disposes of waste products into proper containment, and ensures a safe work environment.
