Provides day-to-day maintenance and repairs to company-owned light, medium, and heavy vehicles and trailers to help ensure a safe operating fleet at the lowest cost. Work includes reviewing shop orders and DVIR reports or listening to operators describe problems; diagnosing mechanical failures; and removing, replacing, assembling, and installing parts and components. Systems and components include sheet metal, frames, suspensions, electrical, ignition, fuel, steering, hydraulic and braking systems, heating and A/C units, axles, hubs, tires, wheels, and coupling units. The role includes all aspects of Class II Vehicle Technician work, preventive maintenance, and DOT inspections. The mechanic works safely and productively, diagnoses problems, tests repairs, maintains service records, and communicates work status, additional repair needs, and parts requirements to the lead technician. The position also involves assisting and training other mechanics, supplying the hand tools needed for assigned repairs, and complying with company safety, environmental, and emergency procedures. Work is physically demanding and takes place around heavy and moving machinery, with exposure to loud noise, fumes, hand tools, and extreme outdoor weather. The employee must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, frequently climb over and under vehicles, and walk and stand on concrete for extended periods.
