About The Position

MECH TECH G 1 (OUTSIDE MACHINE OPERATOR) is a full-time position at Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII. This role involves operating light-duty bench- or floor-type machine tools and equipment. The position requires the ability to work in various environments, including extreme heights and confined spaces, and perform physically demanding tasks. Candidates must be able to pass a respirator fit test and work an assigned shift. Newport News Shipbuilding is the largest industrial employer in Virginia and a key builder of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent.
Climb ladders and work at extreme heights.
Work in small, tight, or confined spaces.
Kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
Lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more.
Work while repeatedly reaching overhead.
Work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
Take and pass a respirator fit test.
Work assigned shift as production needs.

Responsibilities

Operates light-duty bench- or floor-type machine tools and equipment such as small lathes, power mills, extruding machines, drills or punch presses, power brakes, shears or saws.
May set up machining machines and make adjustments.
Performs maintenance on machines.
Checks work using prescribed gauges, jigs and fixtures to measure close tolerances.
May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.
