About The Position

The Meat Clerk works in the Meat Department at Sprouts Farmers Market, providing friendly, prompt customer service and maintaining product knowledge, safe food-handling practices, and preparation techniques. This hands-on role includes receiving, storing, and grinding meats; unloading and transporting fresh, cured, and boxed meats and poultry; checking deliveries against invoices; and examining and rotating stored meats to maintain freshness.

The clerk assists customers with questions, special orders, and other needs; shares information about weekly ad items; and directs customers to products throughout the store. The role follows department procedures and the “Clean as You Go” and “Fresh at 4” programs, and includes housekeeping and sanitizing duties. The position requires working in a fast-paced, temperature-controlled area and handling meat department tools and equipment.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Basic knowledge of math, weights, and measures.
• Dependable and reliable; able to perform other related duties as assigned.
• Outgoing, friendly behavior, a positive attitude, and ability to interact with customers.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule that changes with business needs, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Good communication skills and ability to take direction and participate in a team environment.
• Must be capable of standing continuously for up to 4 hours and for a total of 8 hours per shift; able to walk up to 2 miles per 8-hour shift.
• Ability to work inside a temperature-controlled area and perform general housekeeping and sanitation duties.
• Good vision required for using sharp knives, a band saw, grinder, sausage maker, box cutter, wrapping machine, and tenderizer.
• Ability to lift or carry products weighing 25 to 90 lbs. between heights of 4 and 60 inches, over distances up to 10 feet, for up to 20 hours.
• Ability to use a pallet jack to move pallets weighing up to 500 lbs. horizontally, requiring up to 85 lbs. of force, over distances up to 100 feet, for up to 5 hours.
• Ability to move product racks weighing up to 70 lbs. horizontally, requiring up to 25 lbs. of force, over distances up to 50 feet, for up to 10 hours.
• Ability to move tables weighing up to 70 lbs., requiring more than 35 lbs. of force, over distances up to 2 feet, for up to 1 hour.

Responsibilities

• Provide prompt, friendly customer service and assist customers with questions, special orders, and other needs.
• Maintain product knowledge and knowledge of weekly ad items, and direct customers to product locations throughout the store.
• Receive, store, and grind meats; unload and transport fresh, cured, and boxed meats and poultry from delivery trucks.
• Count and weigh incoming items and compare results with invoices.
• Examine meats in storage and rotate them to avoid aging.
• Follow safe food-handling practices, department procedures, company recipes, and the “Clean as You Go” and “Fresh at 4” programs.
• Perform general department housekeeping and clean and sanitize work areas, including tables, floors, walls, cases, coolers, and freezers.
• Follow applicable safety, health, weights, and measures regulations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
