About The Position

This position serves in a regional capacity and requires the incumbent to work from their home location as a base of daily operational headquarters to service their designated worksites. The role involves performing processing inspections in state and/or federal plants on a variety of fresh, smoked, cured, or cooked meat and poultry products. The inspector will also conduct antemortem and postmortem inspections of animals and/or poultry, inspect processing procedures daily for proper product formulations and labeling, and submit product samples for laboratory analysis to determine compliance with laws and regulations. Overtime, including evenings and weekends, is a condition of employment. The position is classified as light work, involving lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. The job may require significant walking or standing, or involve sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. The incumbent must be able to tolerate exposure to unpleasant odors, extreme cold, and heat, and use safety practices around dangerous machinery.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school (preferably with courses in algebra, biology, or chemistry).
  • Requires the successful completion of an agency approved meat and poultry inspection training program.
  • Requires completion of a name-based background screening and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires the ability to successfully pass a preemployment physical.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • This position is considered light work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(b)). Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • This job may require a good deal of walking or standing or involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls.
  • This position requires residency in one of the following counties: Whiteside, Carroll, Ogle, Lee, Bureau, Henry or Rock Island.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
  • Requires ability to tolerate exposure to unpleasant odors in slaughterhouses and in meat preparation areas, to extreme cold in meat lockers and heat in processing areas.
  • Requires ability to use safety practices around dangerous meat cutting and processing machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Performs processing inspections in state and/or federal plants on a variety of fresh, smoked, cured or cooked meat and poultry products.
  • Conducts antemortem and postmortem inspections in state and/or federal plants of animals and/or poultry.
  • Inspects processing procedures in plants daily, for proper product formulations and labeling on product.
  • Submits product samples for laboratory analysis to determine compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
