About The Position

The Meat Department Manager is responsible for working closely with all Meat associates to ensure company policies and procedures are followed, department goals are met, and associates' needs are addressed. This role contributes to store sales and profitability by managing all aspects of the meat department operations, including labor, expenses, pricing, stock levels, merchandising, and customer service. The leader guides a team of Associates to provide exceptional service and guidance to customers regarding meat selection and preparation.

Requirements

  • High School Education or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5-7 years of leadership experience, with at least 2 years in a manager role.
  • Thorough knowledge of the retail food business.
  • Thorough knowledge of perishable department operations.
  • Merchandising skills.
  • Ability to make timely and effective decisions.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with customers and all personnel.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle a diverse crew in a stressful environment.
  • Thorough understanding of all safety requirements and company safety policies.
  • Ability to apply on-the-job safety training to recognize and react to possible safety hazards.
  • Proper training and knowledge of hand jack, baler, forklift, proper lifting techniques, proper scanning techniques, hand truck, trash compactor.
  • Must have WI Certified Food Manager License (Hometown Grocers will pay for certification if not already obtained).

Responsibilities

  • Leads, coaches, teaches, and reinforces company culture, customer service, and performance expectations to all Meat associates.
  • Maintains adequate staff levels by interviewing applicants and extending job offers.
  • Ensures team receives proper training.
  • Finalizes and approves weekly work schedules for Meat associates.
  • Writes and conducts performance reviews of Meat associates.
  • Documents violations of company policies/procedures and conducts appropriate corrective action.
  • Answers questions and provides guidance to all meat associates.
  • Implements new standards and store policies.
  • Conducts "Huddle Ups" for all Meat employees regarding new policies or areas needing improvement.
  • Prepares coaching sessions, performance reviews, event notes, training checklists, and store sales documents.
  • Checks emails three times daily for important items.
  • Ensures all department standards are met in the Meat department.
  • Observes sales floor and back stock conditions and takes corrective action.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory levels and ensures accurate pricing on products.
  • Communicates and cooperates with Store Manager, Support teammates, other Department Managers, and Meat Associates.
  • Oversees all aspects of the Meat department operations.
  • Fulfills special orders or delegates them to employees.
  • Ensures correct signage is displayed throughout the department.
  • Ensures the department is faced and full at all times, with no holes.
  • Ensures cleanliness of the entire Meat department.
  • Provides customer service to guests, assisting them with finding items and taking orders.
  • Packages and prices items from the service case.
  • Answers the telephone and assists callers with proper phone etiquette.
  • Addresses guest concerns and resolves issues.
  • Assists all Meat department associates with daily responsibilities while leading by example.
  • Develops Assistant Manager and/or Department Lead for advancement opportunities and to maintain department standards.
  • Contributes to overall cleanliness by picking up, organizing, and cleaning work areas, shelving, and sales floor.
  • Maintains food safety logs and ensures compliance.
  • Responsible for the department’s timekeeping accuracy and communicating any issues to payroll or HR.
  • Ensures all quality standards are met, including quantity expectations at 100% by 10 am and 5 pm.
  • Maintains regular, timely attendance and provides adequate notice for absences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
