About The Position

The Meat Cutter Apprentice is a structured, entry-level training role designed to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience required to become a fully proficient Meat Cutter. Over the course of a one-year apprenticeship, the apprentice will receive hands-on training, formal feedback, and progressive skill development under the guidance of the Meat Manager and experienced team members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Ability to represent the Co-op in a positive manner
  • Demonstrated interest in learning a skilled trade within the food or grocery industry
  • Ability to follow direction and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality
  • Basic math skills for weighing, portioning, and pricing

Nice To Haves

  • Previous retail, food service, or grocery experience preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing, cutting, trimming, and packaging meat products according to department standards
  • Learn and apply proper knife handling, cutting techniques, and safe operation of equipment
  • Support product merchandising by stocking, rotating, and maintaining visually appealing displays
  • Ensure all products are properly labeled, priced, and meet quality standards
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment: Clean cases, shelves, bins, tables, coolers, and floors on a regular schedule
  • Follow strict sanitation practices, including frequent handwashing and use of protective gloves
  • Follow all food safety and workplace safety procedures and guidelines
  • Assist with inventory management, including receiving, storing, and rotating product properly
  • Progressive training in meat fabrication, trimming, portioning, and presentation
  • Developing extensive knowledge of meat products, vendors, and sourcing
  • Building expertise in cooking methods and product utilization to better serve customers
  • Food safety, sanitation standards, and regulatory compliance
  • Customer engagement and consultative service skills
  • Time management and production efficiency
