Measurements and Controls Engineer

Corning•Durham, NC
•$81,701 - $112,339

About The Position

The Measurements and Controls Engineer applies physics and sound engineering principles to solve complex non-contact measurement and inspection challenges for Life Sciences labware and pharmaceutical glass packaging. The role leads cross-functional teams to develop and transfer measurement and inspection systems into manufacturing, including designing experiments and measurement system analysis (MSA) plans to validate performance against industry standards and quantify system capability. The engineer partners with external suppliers and machine builders on capital projects, contributes metrology and inspection expertise to PFMEA and control-plan reviews, and works with internal and external specialists to ensure product quality meets customer expectations and GMP requirements. The position also supports manufacturing to sustain reliable inspection processes and production performance. The role supports and standardizes inspection processes across global LST sites, coordinates technology transfers and system installations, and provides training and troubleshooting to plant engineering, maintenance, and operations teams. Travel of 10%–25% or more may be required, including international travel. The schedule is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with weekend support as needed and off-hours meetings and email as needed. Immigration sponsorship is not available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience designing, troubleshooting, and/or deploying measurement, metrology, or inspection systems in manufacturing or a related field; hands-on co-op and internship experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of image-processing algorithms and measurement tools for blob analysis, edge finding, morphology, feature extraction, classification, and dimensional metrology.
  • Understanding of calibration, accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility, measurement uncertainty, and mechanical sources of variation in industrial environments.
  • Ability to apply good engineering practices, including appropriate alignment, calibration, and optical-design considerations within complex opto-mechanical systems.
  • Experience identifying technical risk, supporting project schedules, and driving assigned deliverables to completion.
  • Effective cross-functional leadership and communication skills, including the ability to manage suppliers and partners, explain complex technical systems to varied audiences, work through ambiguous objectives with urgency, and communicate clearly throughout a system’s lifecycle.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong background integrating electrical and mechanical measurement, sensing, vision, and automation systems, including laser-based, displacement, force, temperature, interferometry, and chromatic-confocal technologies.
  • Experience in optics, measurement, metrology, and inspection systems.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and development of measurement hardware, fixtures, tooling, instrumentation, sensors, or related algorithms.
  • Experience with industrial inspection platforms, PC-based measurement software, data acquisition, PLC/controls integration, industrial communications, and object-oriented programming.
  • Knowledge of high-speed vision inspection and automated part handling for transparent glass in demanding hot and dirty manufacturing environments, ideally in GMP-regulated pharmaceutical, food and beverage, or medical-device industries.
  • Advanced degree in electrical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, or computer science.

Responsibilities

  • Support and standardize measurement and inspection processes across global LST sites.
  • Lead governance, run-to-standard activities, gauge improvement plans, and resolution of capability gaps.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance and Process Engineering to define equipment requirements, specifications, setup, and job-change procedures.
  • Coordinate technology transfer, installation, expansion, and migration of new inspection systems across sites.
  • Manage suppliers and machine builders to deliver systems and capabilities on time, including coordinating NDAs and JDAs.
  • Provide hands-on metrology and inspection expertise for projects within the LST Division.
  • Execute experiments, MSAs, repeatability studies, and GMP validation to verify system accuracy, precision, reproducibility, and product-quality capability.
  • Benchmark systems against industry and business performance standards.
  • Train plant engineering, maintenance, and operations teams, and provide remote and on-site troubleshooting support.
  • Participate in PFMEA and control-plan reviews as the metrology and inspection subject-matter expert.
  • Provide manufacturing support to sustain reliable inspection processes and production performance.
