About The Position

This position works directly with the MCC Mental Health and Wellness Educator in the counseling center to work on developing and implementing outreach and programming initiatives for the campus community. Peer Educators are students who will engage in health promotion outreach education and programming to their peers to improve the overall health and wellness of the student body. They will achieve this mission by engaging in positive, skills-based, and interactive educational programs and campus wide events.

Requirements

  • Eligible for student employment as indicated by HR at the student's campus.
  • Clear basic background check
  • Good standing with institutional community standards.
  • Good academic standing (GPA of 2.5 or higher).
  • Sophomore, junior, or senior (applications may be accepted from first-year students toward the end of their first year, for employment beginning during their sophomore year).

Responsibilities

  • Spend 5 to 10 hours per week working on outreach through education and programming.
  • Plan and conduct events and services that normalize help-seeking and promote college student mental health and wellness.
  • Outreach and programming initiatives may be delivered through a variety of formats, including: Guest speaker engagements (e.g., classes, student club/organization meetings, athletic team meetings, etc.)
  • Individual peer-to-peer discussions or mentoring, consistent with their role and training as a Peer Educator
  • Workshops
  • Small or large group discussions about preventive care options, including those that cover Resources and services available on campus
  • Adjustment to college
  • Homesickness
  • Healthy relationships
  • Stress management
  • Self-care and coping skills
  • Academic stress and performance
  • Supporting other peers who may be struggling
  • Bystander intervention
  • Effectively refer and connect students to available campus resources and services.
  • Attend a weekly Peer Educator administrative meeting.
  • Develop positive, supportive, and collegial relationships with fellow Peer Educators and other counseling center staff.
  • Some evening and/or weekend hours may occasionally be required.
