About The Position

Soluna is seeking an MBA Intern for its Development & Strategy team. This role focuses on the initial screening and qualification of potential sites for growth, which is critical for the company's success. The intern will manage inbound leads and proactively sourced opportunities, applying Soluna's qualification criteria. This involves assessing factors such as the availability of curtailed or low-cost power, interconnection feasibility, land, fiber, and water, and whether the project meets the company's return thresholds. The primary responsibility is to conduct a disciplined screening process, building a preliminary economic model to assess the opportunity's viability. The intern will produce clear recommendations for advancing opportunities to full diligence or rejecting them with well-reasoned explanations. This is a high-ownership position within a small team, where the intern's assessments will directly influence strategic decisions about future site development.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an MBA program with an expected graduation date following the internship period.
  • Strong Excel modeling skills, including the ability to build screening models from scratch.
  • Demonstrated analytical judgment, with the ability to reach defensible conclusions with incomplete information and clearly state unknowns.
  • Clear and concise written communication skills, capable of summarizing complex opportunities effectively for executive review.
  • Genuine interest in energy, digital infrastructure, or the intersection of these fields.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in energy, infrastructure, project finance, investment banking, private equity, or corporate development.
  • Familiarity with U.S. wholesale power markets, interconnection processes, or renewable project development.
  • Exposure to market data platforms such as Orennia, Velocity Suite, or similar.
  • Working knowledge of Bitcoin mining economics or AI/HPC data center demand drivers.
  • Comfort building presentations in PowerPoint for investor and board-facing audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the qualification and screening of inbound and sourced leads through Soluna's established framework, evaluating power cost and curtailment, interconnection status, land, fiber, and water availability, and counterparty credibility.
  • Produce a standardized one-page qualification summary for each lead to facilitate quick and consistent go/no-go decisions by the team.
  • Provide clear recommendations (advance, park, or pass) for each opportunity, documenting the reasoning, especially for rejections.
  • Maintain the lead intake queue to ensure timely review of all opportunities.
  • Build first-pass economic screens for qualified sites, estimating power costs, capacity, indicative capex, and top-line returns.
  • Conduct sensitivity analyses on key variables like energy price, curtailment hours, hashprice, contracted AI/HPC revenue, and time to energization.
  • Pressure-test counterparty assumptions against market data and identify any discrepancies.
  • Ensure the screening model is well-maintained and reusable for the team after the internship.
  • Track opportunities across major power markets (ERCOT, SPP, MISO, PJM), monitoring interconnection queue movements and curtailment trends.
  • Update the pipeline tracker and executive summary for leadership.
  • Conduct research on specific markets, utilities, or counterparties as needed to support deal conversations.
  • Present a summer project focused on improving Soluna's opportunity screening and qualification processes to the Development & Strategy team and senior leadership.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to work on a high-ownership role on a small team.
  • Influence strategic decisions about future site development.
  • Be part of a diverse, driven team of entrepreneurs, energy experts, private equity leaders, storytellers, and engineers.
  • Contribute to making the world greener.
  • Be part of a company that champions its teams and develops its people.
