About The Position

These positions provide system and school level leadership and statewide support for improving mathematics instruction and student outcomes in Maryland. They play a critical role in advancing the state's mathematics priorities, including those outlined in the Maryland PreK-12 Mathematics Policy and the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future. The Mathematics School Improvement Network Specialists support the design and delivery of the Mathematics School Improvement Network, which builds the capacity of school leadership teams to improve the quality of math instruction and student outcomes in collaboration with district leaders, with an intense focus on schools in improvement status. This work serves as a primary lever to strengthen instructional practice and, ultimately, increase student learning. The role includes designing and delivering professional learning and aligned coaching for school leadership teams, including administrators, instructional/math coaches, and identified lead math teachers.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree or the equivalent of 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate coursework in mathematics, STEM, education or a related area from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of administrative or teaching experience in or affiliated with mathematics programs in prekindergarten through 12 settings or related areas.
  • Candidates may substitute a Bachelor's Degree with 7 years of the specified content experience to satisfy the Minimum Qualifications noted above.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the position option for one year of the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Education Program classifications or Education Program specialty codes in the Education field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of teaching experience in a Kindergarten through 8th Grade Mathematics Education Program.
  • Experience with Kindergarten through 8th Grade mathematics programs and curriculum.
  • Experience in teaching environments as an Instructional Coach, Mathematics Department Chair, or Administrator that supported Mathematics Instruction.
  • Experience aligning Instruction to Maryland College and Career Ready Standards and Frameworks for Mathematics and Knowledge of college and career readiness pathways, standards, trends, regulations, policies, and issues related to mathematics and STEM fields of study.
  • Experience implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and providing high quality and service level-based support and technical assistance for education programs including professional learning aligned to research-based math instructional practices.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse communities and organizations for the purpose of implementing programs and strategies.
  • Experience developing and delivering research based and best-in-class professional development programs.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a strategic partner to LEA leadership to support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of Maryland’s Math School Improvement Network to support the state’s mathematics priorities.
  • Designs and delivers professional learning experiences and aligned leadership professional development for local school system leadership teams, administrators, instructional/math coaches, and identified math lead teachers to build the capacity to improve the quality of math instruction and student outcomes.
  • Develops resources, tools, and aligned training materials to ensure statewide coherence in coaching models and expectations.
  • Collaborates with district leadership teams to align professional learning, curriculum implementation, and coaching supports to evidence-based mathematics instructional practices.
  • Facilitates and contributes to the development of local mathematics instruction implementation infrastructures using coaching frameworks, instructional walkthrough tools, and continuous improvement cycles.
  • Reviews and provide feedback on LEA math plans, data reports, and implementation deliverables to ensure coherence with state priorities.
  • Supports the Director of Mathematics and Assistant Director of Mathematics Coaching in managing key projects, preparing policy guidance, and organizing statewide mathematics events and convenings.
