About The Position

The Math Specialist will provide one-on-one and small-group instruction and tutoring to TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) participants for a learner-centered approach to meeting success outcomes. As the supervisor for peer tutors in the program, this position will provide onboarding, training, and oversight of student-employee performance goals. As liaison for SSS, the Math Specialist works closely with UWL math department faculty and Tutoring & Learning Center leadership to maintain relationships and align support practices according to curricular expectations. SSS-eligible students include first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities. This position reports directly to the Director of SSS. The review of applications starts on May 17, 2026. Applications received on or before May 17th are prioritized and review will continue until the position(s) is/are filled. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in math, math education, chemistry, biology, science, or related fields.
  • Experience tutoring, teaching or instructing students in math or sciences.
  • Experience empowering students and facilitating student success.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Computer literacy.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or higher in the sciences, math, education, or related fields.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience instructing and/or tutoring at the post-secondary level.
  • Experience working with TRIO-eligible populations (first-generation college students, individuals from low-income households, or individuals with a documented disability).
  • Knowledge of, or experience working in, TRIO Programs.
  • Familiarity with student retention issues and strategies.
  • Similar experience or background as that of TRIO participants.
  • Additional training and study.

Responsibilities

  • Provide personalized academic support focused on clarifying concepts and improving problem-solving skills while empowering students with confidence-building experiences.
  • Assess SSS participants’ math and science skills and learning needs based on major to identify learning gaps and develop customized improvement plans.
  • Stay current with course material or course outcomes in specific subject areas, utilizing technology, web-based resources, and/or online tutoring platforms in support of student learning needs.
  • Provide tutoring support for the enhancement of student study skills, time management, and financial literacy goals.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by building relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Demonstrate and practice cultural sensitivity, understanding and respect for a range of student needs in the university setting.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise peer tutors to support students in math, business, and science coursework.
  • Assess applicant skills using transcripts and faculty references to determine suitability of skills as tutor for specific courses at UWL.
  • Establish tutoring schedule in collaboration with student employees and SSS team for publication prior to week one of each semester.
  • Provide oversight for onboarding tasks in coordination with HR.
  • Lead and motivate peer tutors by developing them professionally and personally.
  • Create, deliver and facilitate ongoing training needs specific to SSS populations, grant expectations, and office procedure.
  • Facilitate monthly check-in meetings with employees in both one-on-one and team building efforts.
  • Maintain student records necessary for evaluations of grant assessment and academic support objectives.
  • Assist in outreach efforts to new SSS-eligible students by participating in campus events including, but not limited to, START (new first-year student orientation), TREK (new transfer student orientation), Campus Close-ups, and Involvement Fest.
  • Present to classes and student organizations about the services offered through SSS.
  • Foster a welcoming community and cultivate students’ sense of belonging.
  • Establish and maintain mentoring relationships with learners to help overcome barriers through referrals among SSS team members and campus partners.
  • Assist in planning SSS events and participate in department, division, and campus-wide activities to promote belonging as well as the enrollment and retention of SSS participants.
  • Serve as primary SSS liaison to Tutoring & Learning Center as well as Math, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology Departments.
