About The Position

Performs complex, high-level diagnostic ultrasound examinations for patients receiving maternal-fetal medicine services under established protocols and appropriate clinical guidance. Applies theoretical and developing professional knowledge to complete work of limited scope and complexity, recognize basic findings, and produce accurate images and documentation for physician interpretation. Contributes to smaller projects and routine departmental activities while building proficiency in high-risk obstetric and fetal imaging.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited program for an AAS in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
  • At least 2 years of experience.
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in Obstetrics and Gynecology (RDMS–OB/GYN) certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
  • Fetal Echocardiography (FE) credential from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association or another health system-approved provider.

Nice To Haves

  • Nuchal Translucency Quality Review certification or equivalent credential within the health system’s required timeframe, if the position performs first-trimester screening examinations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and limited-complexity maternal-fetal medicine ultrasound examinations in accordance with physician orders, established imaging protocols, safety standards, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Apply developing knowledge of maternal and fetal anatomy, physiology, pathology, and ultrasound principles to acquire diagnostic-quality images for physician interpretation.
  • Acquire ultrasound images and measurements for fetal anatomy, growth, viability, presentation, placental location, amniotic fluid, cervical length, Doppler studies, complex Gyn studies, invasive procedures, and other ordered examinations.
  • Analyze basic imaging results for image quality, completeness, and consistency with the ordered examination; obtain additional images or measurements when necessary.
  • Carry out proper patient identification, positioning, equipment preparation, infection-prevention practices, and ultrasound safety procedures throughout each examination.
  • Communicate examination procedures and routine instructions to patients in a clear, compassionate, and culturally sensitive manner while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Escalate unexpected, technically difficult, or potentially significant findings to the interpreting physician or senior clinical team member without independently providing a diagnosis to the patient.
  • Coordinate with physicians, nurses, genetic counselors, schedulers, and other care-team members to support timely examinations, complete documentation, and continuity of patient care.
  • Contribute to departmental quality, education, and process-improvement activities and share developing technical knowledge with students or colleagues when requested and within the scope of demonstrated competency.
