About The Position

Under the supervision of the Manager, Clinical Services or designate, performs a variety of duties associated with the Family Birthing Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Child/Youth Services or the Maternal Operating Room (OR), such as checking, cleaning and stocking of supplies and equipment; checking the anaesthetic supplies in the anaesthetic epidural carts and drawers and restocking the Maternal OR anaesthetic equipment and drawers according to established written procedures; setting up sterile delivery tables; and transporting mothers and mothers-to-be. Performs a variety of clerical duties such as assembling charts, maintaining paper chart supplies and ordering a variety of forms.

Requirements

  • Grade 10, plus 1 year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies equipment required and sets up sterile delivery tables using sterile techniques.
  • Checks all drawers, cupboards, procedure carts, overhead warmers, and patient rooms to ensure appropriate supplies are available; restocks where necessary.
  • Checks and puts away supplies and equipment received from Central Processing Department (CPD) and other departments.
  • Maintains the anaesthetic supplies in the epidural cart drawers, including restocking, removing and replacing outdated medications from ward stock.
  • Maintains and stocks unit supply of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment, including breastfeeding equipment, for the department according to established quotas.
  • Rotates stock and returns outdates to Central Processing Department for reprocessing according to established procedures.
  • Checks oxygen therapy supplies, entonox delivery system and replaces filters; cleans, reassembles and performs quality assurance checks on infant resucitation units by re-assembling oxygen and suction equipment and assuring its functionality. Reports malfunctioning equipment to the manager/CRN/delegate. Records bio-medical repairs by entering into appropriate log book; assures repaired equipment is returned to service.
  • Maintains and rotates stock of IV solutions, supplies and equipment related to oxygen therapy, and non-control medications; returns outdates to appropriate department according to established procedures.
  • Collects used instruments, counts against the standard and returns instruments to CPD for reprocessing. Returns used anaesthetic equipment such as ECG leads and masks to CPD for cleaning and sterilization.
  • Performs initial light cleaning and tidying up duties in readiness for Housekeeping Department's involvement.
  • Prepares the room ready for the next case by restocking with supplies and equipment up to the required number.
  • Transports patients within the department as required, either by wheelchair or stretcher.
  • Maintains stocks of stationary supplies, including assembling of patient charts, according to established procedures.
  • Cleans and reassembles equipment such as suction machines, tourniquet cuffs, anaesthetic machines and carts, and infant warmers, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Delivers Operating Room (OR) case carts with required supplies and equipment to the Maternal OR; following conclusion of operative procedures, collects instrument sets, equipment and supplies from Maternal OR and returns to Central Processing Department.
  • Cleans isolettes and bassinettes as per protocol.
  • Maintains stock for Cytotoxic Precautions for Pediatric Oncology Program, as per established guidelines and procedures.
  • Ensures equipment in treatment room is ready for minor surgeries in Child/Youth Services.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
