About The Position

TerraPower, LLC is seeking a highly motivated Materials Testing Engineer to support the engineering efforts of the Materials Testing & Characterization team. This role will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers focused on development and testing for next generation material and components for sodium cooled fast reactors. You will be responsible for welding and mechanical testing supporting the performance requirements of the Natrium Reactor in a laboratory environment located in Everett, WA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum 6 years of related experience or a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Welding Engineering, or a related technical discipline is required
  • Prior experience in materials testing and characterization for nuclear research or industry applications is required
  • Proficiency in experimental techniques for materials testing, characterization, and analysis is required
  • Proficiency in conducting mechanical testing is required
  • Experience with experimental techniques for materials characterization and analysis, including SEM-EDS is required
  • Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience is required
  • Proficiency in writing and producing technical documentation including test reports and studies is required
  • Ability to work with minimum direction to solve challenging problems

  • This position is subject to qualification requirements in accordance with ANSI/ANS 3.1.
  • Candidates must meet the minimum education and experience criteria applicable to the role, including relevant nuclear industry experience where required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with a variety of materials including metallics and welds is desired
  • Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA-1, AS9100, ISO17025 or others is desired

Responsibilities

  • Install, operate, and manage in-lab welding equipment
  • Design, install, and operate mechanical testing equipment to qualify welds
  • Oversee and develop welding and mechanical properties test programs for understanding material performance and degradation
  • Develop and maintain test designs, plans, specifications, and procedures for testing and qualifying welds
  • Interface with various project teams to ensure materials development and testing efforts meet programmatic objectives
  • Conduct testing and material characterization in a laboratory environment
  • Maintain test program schedule and ensure timely delivery of test results
  • Provide materials engineering support for the procurement of engineered components and systems
  • External procurements of materials and equipment, including authoring statements of work and managing supplier performance to plan
  • Perform scientific analysis on test data and generate technical reports to document new knowledge related to materials performance and behavior, reactor design, and materials qualification
  • Engage with design, fabrication, and operation of custom laboratory experiments
