About The Position

Pascal develops solid refrigerant technologies for cooling a warming world. We have built a commercial-scale refrigerator using our core technology. Our next phase depends on reliable materials synthesis and characterization as we move toward larger-scale production. We’re seeking a Materials Scientist to join our team. Working closely with senior materials scientists, you’ll synthesize and characterize solid refrigerants, prepare repeat batches for development and testing, and help keep our chemistry laboratory running smoothly. You’ll also help the team develop new chemistry suited to each scale, from laboratory synthesis to larger-scale production. This role is a good fit for someone who enjoys hands-on chemistry, takes pride in reproducible results, and wants to turn new materials into working technologies. You’ll learn from experienced scientists and engineers, with opportunities to take on greater technical responsibility as your skills develop.

Requirements

  • B.S. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field with 1–2 years of relevant laboratory experience, or an M.S. with relevant experimental research experience.
  • Hands-on experience with chemical synthesis, materials preparation, or wet chemistry.
  • Ability to follow experimental procedures carefully and produce consistent results across repeated batches.
  • Good laboratory safety practices and an organized approach to handling chemicals, samples, and experimental data.
  • Clear communication and documentation skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from colleagues.
  • Ability to work on-site in Watertown, MA.

  • Chemistry training is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out materials synthesis and formulation experiments with guidance from senior materials scientists.
  • Produce replicate batches of solid refrigerants and composites using established procedures, paying close attention to consistency, yield, and material quality.
  • Characterize samples using techniques such as TGA, DSC, sorption measurements, and X-ray diffraction, with training as needed.
  • Help coordinate and monitor larger production batches, track process conditions, and develop quality control procedures.
  • Maintain clear experimental records and batch histories. Identify deviations and work with senior scientists to troubleshoot synthesis and processing issues.
  • Support daily laboratory operations, including chemical and sample inventories, supply ordering, equipment preparation and upkeep, and safe chemical and waste handling.
  • Help improve standard operating procedures and work with scientists and engineers to prepare materials for prototype builds and testing.
