Waters CorporationTaunton, MA
$116,000 - $193,000Hybrid

About The Position

The Waters Taunton Manufacturing Facility is looking for a New Product Introduction Materials Scientist to join the team. This critical and highly visible position will be the leading technical authority on chemical processes at the Taunton site and will be responsible for ensuring their optimal performance and successful results. Responsibilities include working with R&D to transfer new chromatographic products into the Taunton site and providing ongoing troubleshooting and technical support for those products after launch. To achieve these objectives, this individual will serve as a hands-on technical expert and "go-to" authority, working in a chemical laboratory environment in support of a larger manufacturing facility. This position requires regular travel between the Taunton and Milford sites to interact with both teams. We are looking for an individual who is highly motivated, flexible, and a quick learner, who exhibits methodical thinking to troubleshoot highly complex chemistry-based challenges. The Taunton Manufacturing Facility is an extremely fast-paced environment where many sophisticated projects must be completed simultaneously.

Requirements

  • Master of Science or PhD in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, or related field with a proven track record regarding the application of chemical principles to solving complex technical problems is required.
  • 10+ years of experience in an industrial and/or laboratory setting is required.
  • A proven track record as a recognized subject-matter expert ("guru") providing technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to scientists and cross-functional teams without direct reporting authority is required.
  • A high degree of understanding of theoretical chemistry, very strong analytical skills, and the ability to solve very complex problems.
  • Thorough familiarity with the implementation of small-scale glassware reactions and their associated techniques.
  • Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping abilities with a high level of organizational skill.
  • Thorough familiarity and adherence with chemical and laboratory safety.
  • Experience with and theoretical knowledge of analytical and purification techniques such as thin layer chromatography, column chromatography, distillation, recrystallization, sublimation, etc.
  • Experience analyzing IR, NMR, and Mass Spectra data.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with new product introduction (NPI), including technology/design transfer, scale-up, and process validation in a manufacturing environment, is highly desired.
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with HPLC is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Introduce new chromatographic products into the Taunton Manufacturing Facility by closely coordinating product and technology transfer with R&D and Chemistry Tech Support. This includes establishing, validating, and documenting the manufacturing process, controls, and specifications required to reliably produce each new product, while working with multiple disciplines including Engineering, Production, QC, QA, and others.
  • Lead the effort to troubleshoot, support, and scale-up newly introduced products and their manufacturing processes during and after launch using advanced knowledge of chemistry and statistical analysis.
  • Create and test hypotheses to solve complex problems, design experiments to assess process robustness and repeatability, analyze and interpret data to arrive at scientifically justifiable conclusions, and drive these efforts to a successful outcome.
  • Develop procedures for manufacturing reagents, standards, and new products in small scale glassware using sophisticated techniques.
  • Assist Engineering, Production, and other departments with the implementation of new equipment and the improvement of existing equipment. Collect and analyze data to drive continuous improvements.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
