Materials Scientist I - II - III / Materials Engineer I - II - III

Oxylus Energy•Branford, CT
•$75,000 - $110,000•Onsite

About The Position

Oxylus Energy is hiring Materials Scientists or Materials Engineers at I, II, and III levels to prepare and characterize proprietary catalysts, electrodes, membranes, and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). The role is responsible for ensuring materials are high quality and reproducible, understanding how their structure and properties affect CO₂ electrolyzer performance, and developing improved materials. The position may also involve running electrochemical tests across different operating conditions. The work includes preparing materials with established and novel procedures and formulations, evaluating them through electrochemical testing, producing consistent and high-quality data, analyzing results, and reporting findings to project stakeholders. As the employee grows in the role, they will take on a greater role in experimental design. The position is on-site in Branford, Connecticut, and requires willingness to relocate to the Bridgeport/Stamford area within one year of the start date.

Requirements

  • B.S./B.A. or equivalent degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Relevant experience by level: Engineer I requires a B.S. with 1–2 years or an M.S. with some relevant experience; internships, co-ops, and hands-on projects count. Engineer II requires a B.S. with 2–4 years or an M.S. with 1–2 years. Engineer III requires a B.S. with 4–6 years, an M.S. with 2–4 years, or a Ph.D. with 0–2 years.
  • Hands-on academic or industrial laboratory experience preparing or processing carbon-based materials, polymers, ionomers, or membranes.
  • Familiarity with materials preparation methods such as ink or slurry formulation, mixing and dispersion, spray or blade coating, and hot pressing.
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques such as SEM, XRD, BET surface area, TGA, FTIR, or contact-angle measurements, and ability to interpret results.
  • Basic understanding of electrochemistry and how material properties affect device performance.
  • Experience organizing and analyzing data using Python, MATLAB, Excel, or similar tools.
  • Safe and careful laboratory habits, including handling chemicals, solvents, and fine powders.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with a habit of documenting work.
  • Good written, verbal, and presentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience fabricating electrodes, gas diffusion layers, or MEAs for electrolyzers, fuel cells, or batteries.
  • Experience synthesizing or depositing catalysts.
  • Experience running electrochemical tests such as polarization curves or electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
  • Familiarity with design-of-experiments (DOE) methods.
