About The Position

The Optical Materials group at SRI International's Menlo Park, California headquarters is seeking an enthusiastic Materials Research Scientist/Engineer. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to ongoing and future R&D programs in areas such as nanophotonic inverse design, metasurfaces, and quantum optics. SRI International is an independent nonprofit research organization dedicated to creating world-changing solutions for a safer, healthier, and more productive society. With a 75-year history of innovation, SRI has been instrumental in developing foundational technologies like the computer mouse, robotic surgery, and advancements in cancer treatments, and has contributed to the creation of the internet, high-definition television, and the U.S. Postal Service’s automated letter sorting system. Notable spinout companies include E-Trade, Siri, Symantec, Intuitive Surgical, and Nuance. The Optical Materials group is part of the Space & Survivability Lab within the Advanced Technology and Systems Division. This lab comprises several collaborative groups focused on research and development in optical materials, advanced sensing systems, nanofabrication, energetic materials, radar systems, and atmospheric science, with a primary focus on applying academic research to address Department of Defense (DoD) applications. This position is a junior PI-track opportunity, providing mentorship to develop into a Principal Investigator for new research initiatives, driven by the candidate's own ideas and direct customer interactions.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience required. Higher levels of relevant experience with demonstrated independent work or task leadership skills will also be considered.
  • Experience with commercial full-wave electromagnetic modeling software, such as Ansys HFSS or COMSOL Multiphysics.
  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain/maintain DoD security clearance required.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with inverse design and/or machine learning is a plus.
  • Current clearance is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform numerical simulations to analyze and optimize nanophotonic devices
  • Apply scientific creativity to develop new concepts and research areas
  • Conduct business development and contribute to white papers and proposals
  • Provide technical briefings and reports and support client engagement
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary staff
