About The Position

The Pueblo City-County Library District is hiring a part-time Materials Handling Technician (20 hours per week) to work at the Rawlings library. This position is responsible for shelving materials quickly and accurately, maintaining orderly shelves, and providing excellent customer service. The role requires a physically active individual who can work on their feet, lift, bend, push, and pull. The technician reports to the department manager and collaborates with team members, potentially cross-training for backup support. A key aspect of the role is creating a positive customer experience through effective communication and assistance with library resources, computers, and digital devices.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail is required.
  • Accurate alphabetical, numerical, and subject filing.
  • Basic math and English language skills, both written and verbal, are required.
  • Ability to accurately handle money and make change.
  • Excellent customer service skills are needed with the ability to actively listen and resolve customer issues.
  • Able to present a positive image of the library in attitude, communication style, and appearance.
  • Basic computer skills required for use of email, internet, electronic timekeeping, on-line work order system, and employee access database.
  • Ability to function under flexible and changing conditions.
  • Must have the ability to do repetitive work including hours of standing, bending, kneeling, shelving, lifting, pushing and pulling.
  • Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds and push/pull a fully loaded book cart weighing up to 200 pounds.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Must submit to and successfully pass a criminal background investigation.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated ability to perform alphabetical, numerical, and subject filing is preferred.
  • Knowledge of library e-services with the ability to instruct customers on their use.

Responsibilities

  • Processing materials and returning them to their designated locations in accordance with the Library's cataloging system.
  • Moving book carts containing checked-in and sorted material to the appropriate shelving area.
  • Shelving books and other library materials quickly and accurately to their proper location.
  • Maintaining shelves that are neat, orderly, and inviting to customers.
  • Promoting materials by front-facing books, shifting shelves, and reading shelves to ensure everything is in its proper place.
  • Identifying and removing books and other materials in poor condition and bringing them to the attention of the manager.
  • Cleaning and making minor repairs to materials as needed.
  • Using proper lifting techniques to pick up and move materials.
  • Proactively approaching customers to offer assistance at the point of need.
  • Assisting customers with finding library materials and providing information about library resources and services.
  • Assisting customers with public computers, digital devices, and electronic resources.
  • Inspecting copy machines and printers periodically, cleaning and adding paper as needed.
  • Demonstrating knowledge and skill using Automated Materials Handling (AMH) equipment, hydraulic lifting equipment, and Self-Service Check-out Stations, including troubleshooting general software and equipment errors.
  • Supporting team efforts to maintain a safe and secure environment for customers and staff.
  • Participating in regularly scheduled department meetings.
  • Attending All Staff Development Days and other training sessions.
  • Reading daily organizational communications.
  • Staying current on all library services, programs, and events.
  • Regularly accessing electronic timekeeping, payroll, and personnel employee access systems.
  • Assigned to regularly work with automated material handling (AMH) equipment and hydraulic lifting equipment.
  • Operating and monitoring functions of the AMH equipment.
  • Assigned to regularly remove materials from the book drop(s) and AMH bins for processing.
  • Processing materials lists such as weeding and holds lists, removing materials from the shelves as required.
  • Assisting customers with use of self-service check out stations.
  • Packaging and sending out materials for binding or digital reformatting.
  • Greeting visitors, answering phones, and providing information for customers.
