About The Position

The Materials Engineer will support a major Packaging and Handling (P&H) assessment effort for Northeast facilities. This role will focus initially on evaluating materials, reviewing documentation, and developing packaging/handling requirements for incoming parts. Following the completion of this project, the role will transition into steady-state responsibilities involving maintaining P&H requirements, incoming material testing, review of Certificates of Analysis, and verification of compliance to specifications. The position requires strong analytical skills, collaboration with subject matter experts, and hands-on laboratory experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis, evaluating plots and experimental data sets, performing statistical analysis, and generating technical summaries
  • Hands‑on experience performing general wet laboratory procedures, such as sample preparation, dilutions, and safe handling of chemicals within a laboratory environment
  • Ability to troubleshoot analytical instrument problems, perform analysis, and interpret data
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Background in metallurgy, materials science, chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with material specifications, coatings, finishes, or environmental durability assessments.
  • Familiarity with packaging and environment requirements for sensitive or complex hardware.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory testing techniques and equipment.
  • Strong documentation skills and ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional subject matter experts.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate drawings and specifications of incoming parts to determine appropriate packaging and handling requirements based on material characteristics.
  • Engage with subject matter experts to understand material usage, environmental sensitivities, and manufacturing considerations.
  • Review material documentation, specifications, and technical data sheets; develop recommendations based on engineering judgment.
  • Clearly document findings and support integration of packaging/handling requirements into formal coding and standards.
  • Follow established protocols and contribute to the development of new test plans, fixtures, and custom test setups.
  • Conduct hands-on material testing using standard laboratory techniques and equipment to verify compliance with required specifications.
  • Review Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and confirm adherence to material, chemical, and performance requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies between COAs and specifications in collaboration with suppliers, quality, and engineering teams.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of incoming inspections, validation activities, and material test results.
