About The Position

The Materials Characterization Specialist performs advanced operation of assigned instruments. Conducts specialized training on assigned instruments. Assists with interpretation of data from assigned instruments. These instruments include electron microscopes, focused ion beam microscopes, X-ray diffractometers, and similarly related instruments and ancillary specimen preparation equipment. Provides training to users on the variety of electron and ion beam platforms with a primary responsibility for transmission electron microscopy; the application of existing and development of new characterization methodologies; documentation of procedures for the use by others; performing characterization work on internal and external program requests using the instruments in Alabama Materials Institute (AMI); and the coordination and support of instrument maintenance. Assists users of AMI with data acquisition and interpretation that may lead to scientific publications and technical presentations. Engages users in assisting or completing characterization tasks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience in a research laboratory; OR master's degree and some experience in a research laboratory.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in one or more of the following: aberration correction in STEM and/or TEM, electron beam monochromators, Electron Energy-loss Spectroscopy, Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, or 4D-STEM.
