About The Position

The Material Removal Specialist oversees the reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of grinding equipment, tooling systems, and automated vending machines throughout the facility. This role ensures durable tools and grinding media are effectively managed, optimized, and maintained, while driving process enhancements and partnering with vendors to introduce new technologies and upgraded solutions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of relevant heavy‑manufacturing or fabrication experience, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Strong technical background in welding processes, fitting, heavy fabrication methods, and multi‑team coordination across multiple buildings or work centers.
  • Ability to work autonomously within established practices, exercising sound judgment to resolve operational and technical issues with limited precedent.
  • Motivated to support production teams, proactively identify issues, and drive timely resolution.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capable of engaging and influencing employees and leaders of diverse backgrounds and generations.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

  • Experience with MS Office, SharePoint and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
  • Bachelor’s degree is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide management of durable tooling and inventory controls across CribMaster and automated vending systems. Ensure accurate tool records, optimize tool placement, evaluate usage trends, and maintain overall tooling readiness to support production needs.
  • Lead maintenance and functional support for grinders, vending machines, carousels, actuators, locks, and related systems. Coordinate internal repairs, manage preventative maintenance tasks, and ensure equipment reliability to minimize downtime.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts focused on grinding operations and tooling performance. Evaluate durable tool usage patterns, refine machine configurations, address grinder and media issues, and support internal projects aimed at improving efficiency and consistency in grinding processes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams such as fitters, assemblers, and others to test, validate, and implement new grinding media and tooling solutions that enhance durability, safety, and manufacturing capability.
  • Bring in and partner with external vendors to improve processes through software updates, machine repairs, advanced tooling trials, and new technology integration. Coordinate quotes, requisitions, and repair activities to ensure improvements are successfully implemented.
  • Support hands‑on employee training by utilizing mock‑ups, demonstrating proper grinder and tooling use, and reinforcing correct machine handling practices. Continuously evaluate durable tool safety and assist with coordinating training efforts with the training department to ensure consistent, safe, and effective tool usage.
  • Collaborate with FLMs, purchasing, fitters, assemblers, and tool crib personnel to resolve discrepancies, maintain accurate stocking, support tooling build needs, and ensure alignment across departments on ongoing improvements and operational goals.
