This role involves unloading, moving, and storing a variety of materials, parts, or products. The Material Handler will move material between departments, plants, storerooms, and yards, following routings, move tickets, or instructions. Operation of hand trucks, forklift trucks, walking cranes, and hoists is required.

Requirements

  • Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 40 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.
  • Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner.
  • Two-year certification from technical school or two plus years of previous experience.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.
  • Ability to use a computer.
  • Requires a valid Chauffeur's license to pick up and deliver supplies and equipment, or the ability to obtain such a license within one month of hire.
  • Requires ability to use heavy machinery such as forklifts, manual and electric power pallet jacks and over-the-road trucks (including 13 ton, 24-foot box truck).

Responsibilities

  • Unload, move, and store a variety of materials, parts or products.
  • Move material between departments, plants, storerooms, and yards, following routings, move tickets or instructions.
  • Operate hand trucks, forklift trucks, walking cranes, hoists, etc.
  • Maintain materials for cells by receiving production schedule, PO’s and WO’s from scheduler.
  • Work with operator/supervisor to plan for upcoming jobs through DBR schedule at each cell.
  • Contact Material Manager for each work area to release the PO’s needed for the week.
  • Ensure all materials have certifications when delivered by the steel supplier. If certifications are not present, contact the Material Manager to obtain them.
  • Check certification paperwork with SGW’s WO to ensure the material delivered is of the proper grade and size. Highlight certification and WO to show they match.
  • Ensure a copy of the certification is made for the WO, an original is in the SGW file, and that there is a certification in every WO that is issued.
  • Monitor receiving/inspection bay throughout the day and move parts to the next operation, validating signature of authorization before the 24-hour inspection.
  • Alert supervisor if parts have been in the receiving bay for more than 24 hours.
  • Remove finished goods from work stations throughout the day and take them to the next operation (i.e. hob, OSP, etc.).
  • Consolidate parts into single containers when possible.
  • Keep all receiving bays neat and orderly.
  • Assist with packing and ensure all previous jobs are caught up before working the shipping dock.
  • Fill in for Utility person – running saw, chamfering bars, loading bars, dumping chip hoppers and miscellaneous activities as instructed.
  • Maintain and continuously improve productivity of assigned machines.
  • Maintain the 6S program in the assigned area.
  • Submit required number of continuous improvement ideas.
  • Channel problems and/or complaints to the appropriate person for resolution.
  • Support all Schafer policies and procedures.
  • Report to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.
  • Provide input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements.
  • Resolve problems.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.
