About The Position

This position is for a 12-hour rotating day shift (7:00AM to 7:00PM). Schedule Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Week 2: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday. The Material Handler will remove, flex, jog, and stack printed sheets, folded signatures, labels or other in-process product from the discharge unit of printing press or adhesive coating equipment. They will review signatures for smearing, register issues, bad folds, etc. and notify the Pressroom. The role involves removing folded signatures from the web press and placing them on a pallet or skid for removal to the warehouse or binding areas. The Material Handler may adjust the stacking mechanism on the press according to paper dimensions, and load/unload materials onto or off of pallets, carts, and trays. They will convey materials from storage or work sites to designated areas using a hand truck, electric dolly, or other device. Responsibilities include counting, weighing, and recording the number of units of materials moved or handled on a daily production sheet, and attaching identifying tags or labels to materials or marking information on containers. The role also involves stacking or assembling materials into bundles and banding them together. Additionally, the Material Handler may operate automated equipment, industrial trucks, or electric hoists to assist in loading or moving materials and products. They may assist the Press Crew with make-ready of the equipment, such as retrieving and hanging plates, and recycling/storing plates. The role may also include performing in-process quality checks of printed materials for blemishes, scratches, or other print defects.

Requirements

  • Able to stock, move, jog, arrange, unload, count and rotate items on/off printing press equipment in accordance with operating instructions or under guidance of a press operator or supervisor
  • May require knowledge of operation of automatic counters and tabulate counts for jobs
  • Able to complete appropriate forms relating to stock description, quantity, unit of issue, and the labeling requirements for incoming and outgoing materials
  • Good knowledge of general warehouse layout, item identification codes, basic warehouse procedures, and the storage areas in order to be able to place or pull paper stock, signatures and materials in accordance with standard procedures
  • Good skill in the use of manual dollies, carts or hand trucks and hand tools used in material handling tasks such as hammers, pliers, strapping and stretch wrapping tools and equipment, tape fasteners, metal band sheers and related equipment
