About The Position

Alter Trading Corporation is a 128-year-old industry leader in scrap metal processing, operating over 70 facilities throughout the Midwest and Southern regions. Our corporate support center and marketing operations are based in St. Louis, MO, with trading offices in St. Louis and Hong Kong. This role is responsible for loading and offloading inbound and outbound materials as well as the inspection and grading of inbound and outbound materials, ensuring efficient traffic flow within the yard, and coordinating with other yard personnel to maintain operational productivity. Assist in the recycling process by operating a variety of equipment including forklift, skid loader, end loader, excavator with shear attachment and material handler. This role serves as a point of contact for incoming drivers and customers and is expected to represent the company with professionalism and a commitment to service excellence.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Prior experience operating equipment including but not limited to – forklift, tractor, skid steer, front end loader or excavator is required.
  • Strong communication skills
  • A positive, team-oriented attitude are essential.
  • A history of reliable attendance is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Load, unload and sort ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
  • Inspect inbound and outbound loads for compliance and accurate grading.
  • Deliver courteous and professional experience to all drivers and suppliers.
  • Collaborate with other operators and scale staff to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.
  • Conduct inspections for non-conforming items (e.g., mercury switches, ballasts, sealed containers, etc.).
  • Troubleshoot operational issues to minimize downtime.
  • Coordinate with rail crew to switch and weigh inbound and outbound rail cars.
  • Maintain departmental housekeeping standards.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and consistently wear required PPE.
  • Complete and maintain all required inspections, paperwork, documentation, etc.
  • Assist with additional duties as assigned.
