About The Position

North Shore Steel is seeking a dependable and experienced Material Handler / Crane Operator to join their operations team in Houston. This role involves operating an overhead crane to move heavy steel material safely and efficiently, contributing to the company's reputation for service and delivery. Requirements

2+ years of experience in material handling or crane operation
Skilled in crane capacity limits, rigging, and safe handling of large and irregular steel materials
Strong attention to detail and organizational ability
Able to calculate the weight of materials and accurately read tape measures
Ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate professionally
Routinely lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 lbs. independently and safely
Stand and walk for extended periods, including on concrete floors and uneven surfaces
Frequently bend, stoop, squat, reach, push, pull, lift, and position materials or equipment
Use hands, arms, shoulders, and back to safely operate tools, handle materials, and perform lifting, reaching, and positioning tasks
Safely work in an industrial and warehouse environment with exposure to noise, dust, moving equipment, and varying temperatures
Safely identify workplace hazards, read and record measurements, inspect materials, and respond appropriately to verbal instructions, alarms, warning signals, and hand signals
Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the shift, which may include safety glasses, hard hat, gloves, hearing protection, safety footwear, and other job-specific PPE

Responsibilities

Follow all company safety policies and immediately report any hazards or deficiencies
Attend all mandatory training and safety meetings
Maintain cleanliness and organize materials in assigned work areas
Operate 3 to 5-ton bridge cranes
Conduct daily equipment inspections for forklifts, cranes, and controls
Load/unload trucks and stock materials using dual hoist bridge cranes or forklifts
Report unusual equipment noises or malfunctions
Assist with stock checks and inventory counts as directed
Support training efforts for new employees when needed
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors
